AHANNA GERTRUDE CREMERING:
Notes from Helen Inderhees, 1966.
Joanna was the eldest child of Bernard and Helena Cremering. In her early years she lived around St. Paul's Church. She remembered the Civil War and the soldiers and cannon camped at the end of the street where they lived. In the evenings they would play games and sing songs for the soldiers.

Source of information: Helen Inderhees written in 1966
Henry was the eldest of three children; his two sisters were Helena and Caroline. He lost his parents when he was about five years old. He did not remember anything about his parents or sisters as the children were separated at the parents' death. He never knew any of his Father's family. His Mother's brother was a Catholic Priest, Dr. Henry Meurer, connected with the Cathedral in Osnabruck and he became the children's guardian.
When Henry was about eight or nine years old, he went to live with Dr. Meurer and grew up in his home. He lived there until he was about fourteen when it became time for him to learn a trade and find work. His Uncle had two places where he could go, either a Goldsmith making jewelry or as a painter and decorator. He chose the painter and lived with this man and learned the trade. He liked this man very much and also the work; but, in Germany at the time, when a boy was eighteen, he had to enter the Army and as Dr. Meurer's own Father had lost his life in a war, he thought it would be better if his nephew went to America. His Uncle loaned him the money which he later repaid.
He chose to come to Cincinnati, Ohio as he remembered his teacher in school speaking of this city and decided to come here. He came to Cincinnati in 1866 - arriving in the Pennsylvania depot. He saw a boarding house across from the depot and applied for admission. The people's name was Mr. and Mrs. Henry Keutz and he liked Mrs. Keutz very much as she was very kind to him. He stayed with them and when they moved to Mt. Adams he went with them until he married.
When he arrived in the Pennsylvania Depot he saw a church on top of the hill and when he asked the name he was told it was Immaculate Conception Church and said "some day I am going to live there".
When he arrived here there were hard times and many people were out of work which made it hard for him to get started in his trade, but he took anything he could get. His first job was moving freight in the Pennsylvania Depot. Later he got started in his trade and also went to Night School. He saved his money for a number of years and could now speak English and started in business for himself as a painter and Decorator. He also worked at night in a Building Association. He had a nice business going and painted and decorated some of the finest homes and churches in the city. When we got our first machine we rode through the suburbs and he would point out the places where he had painted and the names of the people who lived there. He had quite a few men working for him. Around 1883 Mr. Greive came to him and said he would like to get his son John started in the business; at first Father did not like the idea of a partner as he was doing very well by himself, but after considering it he decided maybe it would be better as then he could devote more time overseeing the men and mixing the paint and John Greive could take care of the office and get new customers. Their office and plant was on upper Broadway. In winter they did quite a lot of work in the South especially in New Orleans.
He became a citizen in April 5, 1879. He married Anna Cremering in February 1885 and went to New Orleans on their honeymoon.

The data you have on the Paint Store is from 1915. This was just after the
start of the store and my grandfather Henry was the president and his eldest
son Henry Jr or as we knew him as Harry was the Sec-Treas. After Henry
died, Harry became the president and my uncle Lawrence and my father Edward
joined the firm. I believe my father was the corporate Secretary. My Aunt
Helen and Lawrence were also a corporate officer but I do not remember
what. Helen never worked at the store that I know of. Hope you follow this
and if not, let me know.
John

  Notes for HELEN INDERHEES:
Note from Helen Inderhees, 1966.
I remember when President Taft was elected, they had a big celebration here in Cincinnati in his honor. It was in Summer and many small boats and launches were decorated with colored lanterns and horns blowing as the Island Queen and the President and his party went slowly up the river with fireworks on both sides of the river. In Eden Park they gave each person a lantern with a lighted candle; that was a sight I cannot forget as the thousands of lighted lanterns looked like fireflies in the dark. We brought chairs up on the roof of our house to see the celebration as did many more people on the hill.
