* The Cridges of Allegheny Co. PA*

Updated April 16, 2004

I am researching the Cridge Family which arrived in Allegheny County, PA., circa 1840-1850.Matthew Cridge, along with brothers Joseph, and Robert?,were sons of John and Mary England Cridge of Merriot, Somersetshire, England.
Matthew was a Pattern Maker and an Engine Builder by trade and held several patents on steam engines and related machinery. He went into business on the North Side of Pittsburgh which at the time was known as Allegheny City. In later years, he bought a large tract of land in Ross Township, PA that had been part of the Evergreen Hamlet Association, where he built a home and a hotel which is now the Evergreen Hotel.
Joseph Cridge made his living as a butcher in Allegheny City.
