Notes for W
ILLIAM DENSON:
Founder of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church and pastor there until 1860. Elected to the MS State Legislature for one term and also signed the document of secession removing Mississippi from the Union. In Oct 1873 he preached his farewell retirement sermon at the Jerusalem Church in Ludlow, MS. The same day he was killed instantly when his horse ran away with him and threw him from his buggy.

Rev. Denson Formed Baptist Assn.

Several years before the war, Rev. Denson (William), serving pastorates in Madison, Rankin, Scott and Hinds counties, organized a Baptist association composed of these counties and known as the Harmony Baptist Association. During the years after the war, the countryand people were in such a turmoil that the association did not function well and a seperate organization was set up for each county. He is known to have served as pastor of Pisgah, Brandon, Madisonville (then county seat of Madison County), Canton, Fannin, Jerusolem at Ludlow, Miss., Rebobeth, and Sharon Churches.
Rev. Denson's wife Mary having died Jan. 8, 1858 he took as his second wife in 1862 Amelia Lyle. To them were born three boys: William L. Denson, Shadrack and Jesse Rufus.
In October 1873, Rev. Denson had decided that he was too old and feeble to continue his ministry any longer so on the day that he preached his farewell sermon at Jerusalem Church at Ludlow, his horse ran away with him, and after going downhill from in front of the church, he was thrown from his buggy and killed instantly. He was buried at Old Pisgah Cemetery.
David W. Denson, Son of Rev. William Denson and wife Mary, married Catharine V. Davis (great niece of Jefferson Davis) (not in article, but since has not been proven, JDH). Married July 3, 1850.

He was wounded and captured in the city of Jackson (MS) and was carried by boat up the Miss. River to a prison at Camp Douglas, Illinois, where he stayed for 17 months. As they were badly treated and poorly clothed, and given just enough food to survive. He returned home to find his community in a state of turmoil. His farm had not been destroyed, but all his teams of work animals had been stolen. In later years he served as Justice of the Peace in the Pisgah precinct. He served as Treasurer of Rankin County from 1904 to 1908. He died May 6, 1911. George W. Denson, son of David W. Denson, Sr. served Rankin County Beat 3 as a member of the Board of Supervisors from 1908 to 1912. He served another term from 1924-1928.
