EDWARD3 BATTY (JONATHAN2, EDWARD1) was born May 03, 1808 in Lancaster, Lancastershire, England, and died March 23, 1899 in Illinois. He married ANNIE LONG Bet. February 1830 - 1831, daughter of JOHN LONG and MARY. She was born May 04, 1808 in Over Kellet, Lancashire England, and died May 30, 1893 in Illinois. Notes for EDWARD BATTY: Married the twin sister of Mary Long Greenhow, James Greenhow's. According to Ogle County Portrait and Biographical Book of 1886, page 254, she was born Anne Long on May 4, 1808 in Lancaster, England. In checking the birth of Mary Long she has the same birth date. It also shows up in the IGI that John Long and his wife had twin girls. I believe these are the two Long sisters. The picture of Aunt Batty could possibly be Anne Long Batty. This would also create the tie in of the Battys to the Greenhows. According to the snapshot of Edward Batty in 1886 book they came from England in 1856; probably after hearing of the wonderful opportunities in America from Mrs. Batty's sister Mary Greenhow. He owned 160 acres of farmland in Ogle County. "John Greenway, only son of Joseph and Mary Greenway, was born Feb 2, 1849, in England. He died April 12, 1917, at his home in Esmond, Ill. When he was six months old he was brought to this country by his parents. He grew to manhood on his father's farm in Ogle county, Illinois, and continued farming after his marriage on land adjoining his father's farm until 21 years ago. He then moved to Holcomb where he remained for five years when he came to Esmond where he has been in business for the last 16 years. Mr. Greenway married Mary Batty who died five years later. On Oct 24 he was united in marriage to Annie Eliza Robinson. To this union were born three children, Mary Elma Barnes and Grace Barbra, both of Esmond; and Jessie May, who passed to the other land Oct 11, 1888. He leaves to mourn his death two daughters and his faithful wife. Mr. Greenway was one of five children of whom Esther Greenway and Sarah Emma Lee are dece! ased, and Mrs. Elizabeth Batty of Sycamore and Mrs. Mary Ann Pullen of Lindenwood are living to mourn his loss. For the last four years Mr. Greenway has been in poor health, at times suffering greatly. During the last nine months he has been a constant sufferer, his pain frequently being intense. Through all his suffering he was manfully patient and uncomplaining - a splendid example to all. When the end came he was ready and willing to go. Neighbors and friends all unite in offering deep sympathy to the bereaved wife and daughters. " "The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the Esmond church. Rev. Mr. Crocker of Hanover, a former pastor of Esmond officiating, assisted by Rev. Mr. Brown of Esmond and Rev. Mr. Foard of Lindenwood. Mesdames Eychaner and Paha sang and Misses Maud Gibson and Gladys Ashelford carried flowers, which were many and beautiful. The interment was in Bennett Cemetery. The Odd Fellows, of which order Mr. Greenway was a member, conducted the services at the grave. The deceased had made arrangements for the services and his wishes were followed." "Batty was found in the barn at the rear of fhis home by Harry Armington, a neighbor and formerly a resident of Belvidere. He was rushed to the hospital, but loss of blood from the two ugly gashes in his throat caused his death while surgeons worked over him." "His act is ascribed to despondency over continued ill health for a period of several years. He was 72 years old. Mrs. Deloise Welty, who resides on a farm near Genoa, is a daughter." "Funeral services will be held tomorrow." Obituary, Sycamore True Republican, July 16, 1924: "The sad tragedy which ended the life of Henry Batty, good husband and father and valued citizen, on Sunday morning was a shock to all who knew him. He had suffered two operations the last four years and yet had not been fully relieved and the surgeons told him that another operation would not be practicable. These facts so preyed upon him that for the last year he had not been himself. His mind became impaired, but no one feared he would commit any desparate act. Last Sunday morning, he said he would be all right and urged his wife to attend church. She did so and on her return could not find her husband. The assistance of H. W. Armington, their next door neighbor, was enlisted and Mr. Batty was found lying in the hayloft with a severe gash in his throat. An open razor was found nearby. He was live and hurried to the hospital, but he died a few minutes after his arrival there. It was evident that he died at his own hand during sudden temporary abberation." "Henry Batty was the youngest of 12 children of the late Edward Batty and Annie (Long) Batty, of whom only two are now surviving, and was born on June 4, 1852, at Lancaster, England. When he was three years old, he came with his parents to America. They settled on a farm in Ogle County near Esmond, Ill. There he grew to manhood. He was married in Rockford March 8, 1874 to Elizabeth Greenway. The parents remained on the homestead the remainder of their lives, and the son resided there and engaged in farming until 14 years ago. He then retired from active work and removed to Sycamore where he had occupied a handsome home at 123 Center Cross street." "Mr. Batty leaves surviving to mourn his death his widow, one son Clarence Batty, who conducts the homestead farm; two daughters, Mrs. Grant Eddy of Monroe Center, Ill., and Mrs. Delos Welty of Esmond Ill.; one sister, Mrs. Annie Edmonds of Chicago and one brother Edward Batty of Kirkland, Ill." "Mr. Batty was baptized in the Church of England. He was a member of no church organization, but had long been an attendant at the Methodist church. He was a good man, courteous, sociable, honorable and esteemded by all his aquaintances. He had a wide acquaintance and many friends. He will be much missed." "The funeral services will be held at the home this Wednesday, July 16, at 2 o'clock p. m., Rev. J. E. Robeson of Genoa officiating. The interment will be in the family lot in the Bennet cemetary in Ogle county."
