LANNUM Son M S W 6 IN Fa: VA Mo: IN Contacts: KEGreene@aol.com The following is from MEKessler@aol.com A PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD OF BOONE & CLINTON COUNTIES, INDIANA A.W. BOWEN & CO, 1895 LANHAM, JOSEPH MALCOLM "Joseph Malcolm Lanham, farmer of Marion Twp., Boone Co., Indiana was born in Virginia January 1, 1832 and was reared on the home farm. His great grandfather came from Ireland to America in colonial Days and settled in Virginia, where his son, William was born. Pleasant, son of William, was born in Botetourt Co., Virginia, and married Jane Mc Cowen, daughter of James and Cynthia (Castor) Mc Cowen, and to this union were born 13 children, of whom Joseph M. was the sixth in order of birth. Joseph M. Lanham, at the age of 23, came to Boone Co., Indiana on a visit, and was so well pleased with the country that he decided to make this home, but he returned to Virginia for a year and then came back to Boone Co., Indiana, and February 3, 1857, married Mary E. Wright, who was born March 9, 1836, a daughter of John C. and Johanna (Norris) Wright. Mr. Lanham worked in a sawmill for a year after his marriage, and then cleared forty acres of heavily timbered land, taking in payment for his labor 40 acres of similar land. This he later sold and purchased 40 acres in Marion Twp., Boone Co., Indiana. To the marriage of Mr. Lanham have been born the following children: William P. born December 31, 1857 and married to Alice Price, George H. born March 20,1860 and died at 18, John F. born May 27, 1862, and died when young, Johanna, born September 26,1864, and married to Mr. Bush, Amanda, born January 18,1867, and married to AP Popino, Fredrick, born August 23, 1869, and married to Cordie P. Jones, Mollie E. born January 7, 1872, and married to William Kincade, Copeland, born April 27, 1874, Pearl born, August 17,1876, deceased, Cassius born February 10, 1879, Empson, born November 28, 1880, and died June 27, 1882, Olga, born June 27, 1882 (?) Mr. & Mrs. Lanham prospered in their farming, and he had added 20 acres to his original 40, sold out, and bought 79 acres on the east side of his present farm. About 1879, Mrs. Lanham's father died, and the farm by inheritance, and purchase, was increased to 159 acres. This farm is well tilled and has some 600 rods of tiling, and some 15 acres reserved for timber. Mr. Lanham has some fine trotting horses and has made raising sheep a specialty, shropshire strain being his favorite, it being short-legged, heavily-bodied and the leading animal for mutton. His dwelling cost $1,000 and his outbuildings are substantial and commodious; he takes great interest in good roads and has contributed liberally toward their construction, and has a splendid gravel road at his very door. He is a stockholder in the natural gas company and uses gas in his tasty dwelling. He and his wife are members of the Methodist Protestant Church, and their upright walk in life proves the sincerity of their faith. In politics, Mr. Lanham affiliates with the People's Party. He is much respected by his neighbors, and his family enjoy a large share of this respect. Mrs. Lanham has three brothers who served in the late war as follows: Robert was killed at Kennesaw Mountain, William served without injury until the close of the war, Franklin, lost the fingers of his right hand. All three were in the 40th Indiana Volunteer Infantry." October 1899, West Virginia; d. 1925. Notes for ERNEST CHARLES TURLEY: Named as Charles Ernest Turley in Providence Church cemetary, but as E. Charles Turley, son of George and Arizona in 1900 census. Since the cemetary contains: TURLEY Charles Ernest b 1899 d 1925 TURLEY George Frederick (Husband) b 1870 d 1915 TURLEY Arizona Jordan (Wife) b 1871 d 1920 TURLEY Beniah Hutchins on (Husband b 1847 d 1932 TURLEY Sarah Ann Wright (Wife) b 1840 d 1916 it seems probable that E. Charles Turley and Charles Ernest Turley are the same son. A death certificate from WV Vital Records shows a Charles Ernest Turley, single, occ: farmer, d. Aug 9, 1925, buried in WInfield, WV Aug 11, 1925. Death location was the state hospital in Spencer, Roane County, with Typhoid fever as the cause. Undertaker: Vandale Undertaking, Spencer, WV. The attending physician stated he had attended the deceased from Apr 24, 1923 thru Aug 9, 1925. Note: The death year matches the headstone in Providence Church cemetery, as does the burial location of Winfield. But the parents, date of birth, birthplace and age are not listed. Note: A description of Spencer hospital at http://www.pa-roots.com/~roane/history/spencerstate.html says: "... Some of the disorders patients were admitted for were alcoholic excess, overwork, senility, hereditary insanity, worry, ill health, head injuries, syphilis, epilepsy, paralysis, morphia, cocaine use, cholera, disease of the uterus, pneumonia, bereavement, typhoid fever, tuberculosis and childbed fever. " So it looks likely that he caught typhoid and was sent there to be isolated.
