John Barchard, Early Federal Land Grant in Village of Riverview, Des Plaines, Illinois Version 1: Who was he? Well, he was an early settler in this area who suffered all the pains of constant judgements, "land grabbers", "boodlers". A "boodler" was described to me as a faker, and one who obtained or attempted to get property, loans, etc, by false means. It was 1844 when John Barchard purchased an 80 acre plot of ground in what was to be the Village of Riverview. This was a grant from the governor of Illinois to John Barchard, dated August 1, 1844 and recorded January 26, 1847 in book 21, page 546. In consideration of $240 ( international improvement scrip ), Governor of Illinois grants and gives to said John Barchard the E 1/2 of NE 1/4 of Section f29, Town 41 N, R 12 E of the third principal meridian. Barchard and family were busy bees, spreading their purchases throughout the Riverview Village area and other sections of now Des Plaines, such as Orchard Place. Version 2: A time of settling into the area is unknown - few old-timers remember the family but they were here and their children and grandchildren attended the new Riverview school at turn of the 20th century. The Barchard farm of 80 acres is shown on the early land grant maps, and the legal description, taken from an 1856 title search by Page, Shortall and Co follows: Patent, dated August 1 1844 and recorded January 26 1847 in book 21, page 546 in consideration of $240.00 in international improvement script for the east half of the north east quarter of section 29, T-41, range 12 east of the third principal meridian. John & Mary Barchard had three children, Ralph, Joseph and Mary. In the year 1856, John Barchard gave 20 acres of his 80 to his daughter Mary, who had married to James Pitt ( see Pitt family heritage ). Barchard died in 1860, leaving his widow, Harriett, as executrix and sole heir with the restriction that Harriet, "remains Barchard and doesn't remarry." Harriet met all the requirements and the remaining acres were divided among the three children, Ralph, Joseph and Mary Barchard Pitt. Barchard's early land grant, like so many others, was plagued by "boodlers", ( boodlers, the term used in early 1800's for swindlers, or those who whould claim properties under false pretenses ). This forced Barchard to court to prove his legal titles on three occasions - all all three cases it was established. Version 3: The Barchard farm plot of 80 acres is shown on the early Federal grants Maps of the Riverview Village area attached to this history. According to a title search by Page, Shortall and Co., the 80 acres was first in 1847 as follows: From the Governor of the State of Illinois to John Barchard -- Patent, dated August 1844 and recorded January 26, 1947 in book 21, page 546 in consideration of $240.00 in International Improvement Script -- Title for the East half of the North East quarter of Section 29, T-41, range 12, East of the Third Principal Meridian. John and Mary had three children, Ralph, Joseph and Mary. Mary was married to James Pitt and in 1856 she received 20 acres of the original eighty from her father to Mary and her husband, James ( Pitt family a Riverview heritage family ). John Barchard died in 1860 but had expanded his acreage and fought the battles to maintain title to the properties several times. The IGI has these entries: Father: John Barchard, Mother: Harriot 1. From his death certificate, reported by Edna Barchard, he was a retired farmer. He had farmed for 37 years, and had retired from farming in 1912. Belvidere Daily Republican, Apr 17, 1935: "... Defeated candidates for trustee are... James Greenhow, incumbant" from "Recollections of Forgotten Days - A history of Kirkland, Illinois 1894-1967", 2nd ed, by George Gibson: "Coming back to Sixth St starting at the end of Prairie Street on the west side of Sixth St is a hole in the ground, marking the place where the house that serves as a home for Roger Hein and his family on the farm at the south edge of town was first built. Several years ago, James Greenhow, a retired farmer, had this house erected on this site. He and his wife and sister Edna Barchard lived here for a few years. At his death in the early thirties, the home was purchased by John McQueen who had it moved to this farm. He being the owner at this time to replace the original farm home that had been destroyed by fire." On the 1905 Kirkland platt map, this land is labeled as John Greenhow, with Edna Barchard to the south.
