She loved being a homemaker and enjoyed her contact with people as a self-employed saleswoman selling Fashion Frocks, Beauty Counselor, and Shaklee Products. After the death of her husband in 1969, she carried on the Edwin L. Johnson Insurance business for several years. She is survived by two daughters, Nova Larson Quigley and her husband George Quigley of Belvidere, Mardelle and her husband John Pearson of Minneapolis, Minnesota; a sister, Gladys and her husband Russell Paulson of Mesa, Arizona; grandchildren, Krista Pearson and her husband Mark Safford, Adam and his wife Ginna Pearson all of Minneapolis, Kari and her husband Randy Coppinger of Agoura Hills, California, Erik Larson of Rockford; a great-granddaughter, Grace Pearson; fourteen nieces and nephews; many grandnieces and grandnephews, and several great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews; four sisters-in-laws, Ione Johnson, Imogene Clement, Althea Swift, Norma (Jack) Leaver; and Phyllis (Jack) Gray who lived with the Brandt family for a period of time. Hazel held many church offices and served on many committees. She was a friend and mentor to all ages, including many pastors who served the church. She grew up on the Brandt farm north of Kirkland and later was in partnership with her husband in farming there. She assisted the Kirkland Lions Club during the Kirkland Fourth of July celebration and participated in other community activities. As a young girl she knitted sweaters for the WWI troops as a member of The Red Cross. And, throughout her life she was a great seamstress. A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 1st at First Lutheran Church, 510 W. South Street, Kirkland, with Pastor Carl L. M. Rasmussen officiating. They wanted to be sure I came." Melton recently retired from working at the Kirkland Post Office for 29 and one half years and is a familiar face to almost everyone in Kirkland. Her neighbors are some of her biggest fans. "Long before she retired, she's been taking care of all of us, her neighbors", said Melton's next door neighbor, Arlene Myers. As she spoke, several of her other neighbors and family members nodded in agreement. "Shortly after we moved in to our house, Inez had a number of people at her house for a family event and some of them were sitting on her front porch", Myers continued. "These all were people I didn't know, of course, including Inez, because we had been busy moving in." "So I sent over and asked them who lived her, just to find out who my new neighbor was, and Inez said, 'I am'. We had a really nice chat and then I asked her what she did as far as working was concerned. She never said they worked at the post office but instead she told me, "I take care of my neighbors and she does exactly that." "If someone's sick in the neighborhood, she'll make a meal and take it over to them or she'll but a little top or an outfit for a little one somewhere or she'll run an errand for someone who can't make it out. She's always asking if she can pick up something for any of us when she goes to the grocery store. Inez is always doing thins like that. She's a real treasure."
