Proprieter: Edward Colville Description: House & Cottages. The entries from 1807 through 1809 had the occupants as "Pitt & Stiles", those from 1810- 1820 as "Pitt & Fuller", those from 1821-1822 as "Pitt & Others", 1823-1824 as "Pitt & Fuller" and 1825-1832 ( when the registry ended ) as "Self & Others". Edward Colville was consistently listed as the proprietor. So this shows that a Pitt family is residing in Lamberhurst from 1807 through 1824. The Pitt surname was not listed prior to 1807. He was mine host at the Greyhound from about 1855 to his death in 1898. His earliest mention was in 1838 when he ‘scored 72 from his own bat and not out, his batting was excellent!’ Almost every press comment about him suggests he ‘should be tried in County matches’ but he never played at that level. But he was a leading player in a Wadhurst team that did when they beat the county of Sussex in the 1860s; subsequently at most club dinners Mr.Pitt sang a song he composed glorifying that victory. (The club has yet to trace that epic composition.) The Greyhound during his ownership was a mecca for cricketers, such as Alfred Mynn ‘the Lion of Kent’; Edgar Willsher the controversial bowler whose action changed the laws, he was Pitt’s brother-in-law; and Walter and William Quaife, Jacob’s nephews from his sister Frances in Newhaven. Both the brothers transferred their allegiance to Warwickshire after a dispute with Sussex; Walter became the first Sussex batsman to record over 1000 runs in a season (1887), William while at Warwickshire went on to represent England (1899, 1901, 1902) also being named Cricketer of the Year 1902. Jacob Pitt died on 10 February 1898 and his funeral attracted extensive press comment, and most of Wadhurst to his funeral; his gravestone still stands near the west door of the church. (And the private path he created to the then new cricket field of today still runs beside the Greyhound.) In loving memory of Frank Pitt who died June 14th 1936 aged 71 years god grant him eternal rest Assault by a boy on a boy" August 15th 1881 Tuesday last at the Mark Cross petty sessions. A lad named Frank Pitt, pleaded not guilty to assalting Owen Thompsett Martin, aged 17, at Wadhurst on the 8th August.-Complainant stated that he went to the Greyhound Inn, kept by the defendant's father, to witness a sale of stock on the day in question. While looking on defendant came up to him and asked him if he had seen enough. He said "yes," and took no more notice, when in about another minuteor two defendant returned and repeated his question, and then took him by the coat collar and trousers, and bundled him off. He may have hit the defendant in the tussel, but defendant struck him violently in the eyes. He then went to his father.- cross ex-amined: Witness said the sale was held in the orchard behind the house. He had not been told not to go there, he should have gone off if the defendant had asked him properly, but defendant handled him roughly.- Thos. Brooks, aged 12, corroborrated, and, cross-examined, said there were other boys there besides themselves. Complainant threw his arms about in the struggle. Those there were not making any noise. SUSAN ANNA5 PITT (WILLIAM4, WILLIAM3, JOHN2, JOHN1 PETT) was born January 06, 1847 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois33, and died July 09, 1904 in Kirkland, Franklin Township, Dekalb County, Illinois34. She married JOHN GREENHOW November 27, 1875 in Hazleton, Buchanon County, Iowa35, son of JAMES GREENHOW and MARY LONG. He was born August 31, 1834 in Lancashire, England, and died September 09, 1885 in Franklin Twp, Dekalb County, Illinois. Notes for SUSAN ANNA PITT: In the 1900 census, Susan Greenhow, widowed, is the head of household in Franklin township, Dekalb County. Living at home with her are Olive (22), Charles (20), Thomas (17) & Martha (16). Olive's occupation is seamstress, Charles' is farm laborer. Susan is shown has having borne 5 children, of whom all five are still living. This contradicts the family bible, which lists the twins born to Susan in 1876 Obituary, Sycamore True Republican July 20, 1904: "Mrs Susan Greenhow, who died at her home a few miles south of Kirkland, on July 9, had been sick since last fall and had been confined to the house since January. Susan Pitt was born in Chicago, January 6, 1847 and was married to John Greenhow in November, 1875, and moved to this vicinity the same year, where she has since resided. To this union were born five children: Mrs Gibson of Fairdaile, Mrs Jarvis of South Grove, Martha, Edwin and Charles, who lived at home. Besides these five are eight step-children, four daughters, Mesdames William Mellor, Robinson, Hyser and Charles Haller, and four sons, George, James, William and John Greenhow. Besides her brother she leaves a brother who resides at Des Plaines and a sister living at Kankakee, both of whom were present at her funeral." Presumably, the brother is Thomas Pitt, married to Margaret Greenhow, sister to Susan's husband John. The above implies Susan and John were married in Chicago. Belvidere Daily Republican, July 15, 1904: "Miss Susan Greenhow died at her home one mile south of town. Funeral Monday at M. E. church. She leaves five children and nine step children to mourn her loss."
