... A the end of the 1860s, Sweden was struck by the last of a series of severe hunger catastrophes. The agriculture which was still only partially modernized had been struggling with difficult times. Now came a series of crop failures. 1867 thus became "the wet year" of rotting grain, 1868 became the "dry year" of burned fields, and 1869 became "the severe year" of epidemics and begging children. Sixty thousand people left Sweden during these three "starvation years"...

The 1880 census lists G. Carlson, age 31, although it is mis-spelled as Cautson in the LDS 1880 census, and the Swedish names Johanna ( John ), and Janni ( Jennie ) confused the census taker.

1890 Platt map for Franklin twp, section 12 is owned by "G. Colson". This land is part of that owned by W. L. Greenhow on the 1905 platt.

The 1900 census lists Gustaf Colston, age 54 ( born Jun 1845 ). He is living in a house not a farm, ( mortgaged, not owned ). Gus and Sophia are living alone; all children have married and moved out.

On the 1905 platt map of Kirkland, this block is bounded on the south by Benham Street, on the east by Third Street, on the north by Prospect and on the west by Fourth Street. The home on the southeast corner is shown as bldg 4 on that map:

Note: Gustaf's immigration is 1865, and Sofia's is 1872. Their first child is born in January, 1874, so marriage occurs in 1873?

"The home on the southeast corner was first built in the 1890's. The first occupant I recall was Mr. Benham, a teacher in the school. It was after him that the street on the south was named. The next occupant was ?. Grant Dibble owned the home after this and later sold it to Emil Peterson. Mr. Peterson remodeled the home and added a workshop to the property. He and his wife lived here for several years and he lives here today. Mr. Peterson is the village plumber."

"Just north of this home is another old house. The first owner I recall was Mr. and Mrs. Gus Colson. Later, Mr. and Mrs. John Swanson occupied the home. Today it is the home of the Harold Blake family."

"Gust Carlson married Sophie and had four daughters including Ida, Jennie, Nellie and one son, Charles. Gust died at age 79 in the house of his daguhter, Mrs. Nellie Greenhow. He was born in Sweden June 5, 1849 and came to America as a young man. He farmed in Kirkland and retired 16 years before he died. His wife Sophia died the July before he did. At the time of his death, they were survived by five children, Charles Carlson, Mrs. Nellie Greenhow of Kirkland, Mrs. Fred Swanson of Forbes, N.D., Mrs. Charles Schandelmeier of Ellendale, S.D., and Mrs. Wm. Schandelmeier of Lost Lake, Montana."

"Gust Carlson of Kirkland died at the home of his daughter Mrs. Nellie Greenhow, Sunday night at 11:30."
"Mr. Carlson was born on June 5, 1849 in Sweden and has lived in this country for nearly 65 years. His wife died six months ago, July 20. Mr. Carlson leaves one son and four daughters, Charles Carlson of Genoa, Mrs. Jennie Schandelmeier of Ellendale, N.D., Mrs. Hannah Swanson of Forbes, N.D., Mrs. Ida Schandelmeier of Lost Lake, Montana, and Mrs. Nellie Greenhow of Kirkland."
"One sister and one brother also survive, Mrs. John Swanswon of Kirkland and Alfred Carlson of Rockford."
"Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon. Burial will be in the Charter Oak Cemetery and Rev. L. J. Trued will officiate."

"Kirkland, Jan 21 - "Gust Carlson, well known resident of Kirkland and vicinity for the past 65 years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Nellie Greenhow here at 11:30 o'clock Sunday night, death being due to the infirmiture of his advanced years."

"He was born in Sweden, June 5, 1848 and came to this country and locality 65 years ago. Besides the daughter mentioned, he is survived by four children, a son, Charles, of Genoa; three daughters, Mrs. Jennie Schandelmeier of Ellendale, N.D., Mrs. Hannah Swanson of Forbes, N.D., and Mrs. Ida Schandelmeier of Lost Lake, Montana; a sister, Mrs. John Swanson, of Kirkland and a brother, Alfred Carlson of Rockford. His wife died six months ago."

"Funeral services will be held on Wednesday afternoon and burial will be in Charter Oak cemetery."

"Mrs. Gust Carlson died at 8:45 o'clock this morning at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. W. Greenhow, Kirkland, where she made her home. She had been ill and suffered a stroke two weeks ago."

"Mrs. Carlson was before marriage Sophia Anderson, and she was born in Smoland, Sweden, March 1, 1847."

"She is survived by her husband, who also makes his home in that of the daughter mentioned, and by the following children: "Mrs. Fred Swanson, of Forbes, North Dakota; Mrs. Jennie Schandelmeier, of Ellendale, N. D., Mrs. Ida Schandelmeier of Turner, Montana, and Charles Carlson of Genoa. She also leaves four brothers, A. G. Besides her husband, Gust, Mrs. Carlson leaves the following other children, Mrs. Fred Swanson, Forbes, N.D., Mrs. Ida Schan, Turner, Minnesota, Mrs. Jennie Schaldelmeier, Ellendale, N.D., and Charles of Genoa. Several brothers and sisters also mourn her loss: A.G. Anderson, Kirkland, Fred of Minneapolis, John, Ft. Dodge, Iowa, Charles of Sweden, and Mrs. Albertina Anderson and Mrs. Hanna Anderson of Sweden."
