He married MARIA BARBARA ENDERLIN July 19, 1846 in Eichstetten, Freiburg, Baden, daughter of JOHANN ENDERLIN and CATHARINE BROTBECK. She was born July 15, 1814 in Boetzingen, Freiburg, Baden, and died February 15, 1905 in Oregon Twp, Ohio.

Mathias Schmidlin

Mathias Schmidlin was born in Bischoffingen, Freiburg, Baden, Germany in 1812. At the time the location was known as the Grand Duchy of Baden. This is located in the southwest corner of present day Germany. The town is near the Rhine river, on the edge of the Black Forest.
As the story is told, Mathias came to the U.S. the first time when he was 18 years old and single. On the return trip to Germany the ship landed in Spain on the 100th day. The passengers were starving so the people on shore threw them loaves of bread to keep them alive. Mathias returned to the U.S. in 1846. He married Maria Barbara Enderlin. She had two children by her first marriage (John and Catherine). Her first husband died in Germany. His last name was Johlin.
The family reportedly lived in New York state for a short time before coming to Toledo. Mathias purchased 160 acres in Oregon township on March 27,1847 from the state of Ohio. He paid $280 dollars for the entire parcel. Mathias could have bought land at present day downtown Toledo. However, Mathias always said he would not buy land near a river. Thus, his purchase in Oregon Twp., a good distance from any river. Mathias eventually built a farmhouse on the land and was a prosperous farmer for many years. In 1875 Mathias purchased an additional 40 acres for $7000 from Alonzo Thatcher. This property was located on present day Navarre Ave. about 1/4 mile west of the farm.
In 1880 the farm was divided among the children. Each received 40 acres for the nominal amount of one dollar. Amelia, Christian, George, and Fred received land on the original farm. Matt Jr. received the land "up the road". Christian received the farmhouse where he lived with his parents until their deaths. In the late 1800's Christian donated the corner of Coy and Pickle roads for the construction of a schoolhouse. When Christian divided his estate his oldest son Arah received the farmhouse. Upon his death his wife gave the house to the Pentecostal church. The church later sold the house. The original farmhouse still stands on present day Coy road near Pickle.
When Mathias first settled in the U.S. the name Schmidlin was translated to the more English sounding name of Smithlin. After that, Mathias was known as Matthew Smithlin. The family went by Smithlin until the late 1800's when they switched back to their original German name of Schmidlin.
Mathias died in 1896 at his home. His obituary read as follows:
"Mathias Smithlin died of Apoplexy at his home in Oregon Twp. yesterday morning. Mr. Smithlin was 85 years old and had not been well for some time. He was feeling as well as usual however when he retired Monday night. He was found dead by his wife yesterday morning.
The deceased was a prosperous farmer and had lived in this section for many years. He came to this country from Germany in 1846 and settled in New York. He moved to the east side several years ago and is well and favorably known."
Mathias had a brother who also settled in Oregon township. John Martin Schmidlin arrived to the U.S. in 1852. He purchased 20 acres at Coy and Starr where he farmed. He joined the army and served his time fighting in the Civil War. He returned after the war to continue farming. He died in 1907.
