Wasco County Oregon Death Record #48.

The following story was told by Alice Botts Cooley
Charles Henry Botts
Fort Supply
Charles lived at home with his parents untill he was 22 years old.
Then he married Harriet Elizabeth Beasley. She is known to the family as Hattie.
They made their home in Milan Missouri. His parents also lived in Milan at
that time.Their first child,Mary Ann,was born June 29,1896.She was named after her Grandmother.Their first son, James Calvin, was born September 17,1897.
Charles Delbert(Bert) arrived December 24,1900.
By that time Charley decided he wanted to see more of the country. In
1901 he and his father, James, moved their families to a small town,Fort Supply,
Oklahoma Territory. They homesteaded adjoining quarter sections, about four miles northwest of Supply.James and Mary made a dug out of dirt with a shingled roof for their home.Charles and Hattie built a wood frame house with a
tin foof. Then tragedy hit the Botts family,James ,the father, died May 1,1903.
The families put their land togeather and, Mary the Mother, moved to live with Charles and Hattie. On May 18,1902 Harriet Jane was born.Alice May was born on April 11,1905.John Louis arrived July 6,1907.
Oklahoma had grown and became more settled.November 16,1907 it
was declared a state. The first govenor was Charles N. Haskell.
Another brother,Bruce Brozilles was born on October,16,1908.I remember when Mother and Jane would tell about things that happened. One of the things was in 1908,when Dad, Jane and I helped move some of the patients across the river (Wolf Creek) to the new mental institution at Fort Supply.Jane and I could never understand why we had to help when we had so many brothers.
December 4,1910 William Frederick was born. Then Arthur Emmett
arrived on March 18,1913.After the birth of Emmett Dad took us on a trip to
Rogersville,Missouri to see our grandparents, the Beasleys. We traveled in two
covered wagons. It took us three weeks to make the 300 mile trip.
We lived one year in Missouri and in 1914 we moved back to the homestead near Supply Oklahoma.Mom didn't really want to move back to Oklahoma because Dad and my brothers,James and Bert were hauling wood for a contractor by the name of Jim Saint John. They were getting $1.25 a load and with two wagons they could haul four loads a day.She said she could buy bacon for six cents a pound, with other prices according. She thought she never had it so good.
One thing I will always remember,on our way back home,we had to swim the Cimmeron River. To make it safe for the rest of us,Dad crossed the river first to see if there was any quicksand. When any of us kids got bored we would mount our stick horses and ride along beside the wagons.
After we had settled again in the homestead house,Dad decided it was too small and getting shabby. In 1914 the old house was torn down and a new one built in it's place. It was another frame house but it had plastered walls and four bedrooms. On January 24,1916 Robert Chestly was born.Grandmother Mary Ann died January 3,1918.The grandparents had willed their land to my parents so now we owned 320 acres.Franklin Max was born September 14,1919 and Ida Leona was born October 18,1921.
Dad and Mom lived with all twelve of us kids on the 320 acres untill Dad decided to move the family to the state of Washington. We needed something other than the covered wagons to travel in so he bought a 1922 Oldsmobile speed wagon.September 22,1924 we moved to Washington and settled on Puget Sound at Shelton. We lived there for nine months. The folks had not decided yet where they wanted to make their final home.In 1925 they moved to Ione Oregon where Dad had relatives by the name of Warren. The Warrens had a house all furnished for Mom and had horses for Dad to start his farming.
After a few years several of the brothers and sisters married and left home. There were three brothers that never married and were at home with Mom and Dad.Dad's health failed and he died in 1945.
After Dad's death the three bachelor brothers took Mom and moved to Ordnance Oregon. She died April 27,1949.Both Mom and Dad ,with four of their sons and three of their daughters are buried in the Ione Oregon cemetary. One son is buried in Portland Oregon. The ones that are living are William of White Salmon Washington,Robert of Hermiston Oregon,Franklin of Tacoma Washington and myself Alice of Naches Washington.Dad was always worried about the name of Botts wearing away but I don't think he will have to worry about it now.He left many grandsons and great grandsons.
The above story was written before 1982.
Now,I,Toni Crowell, will tell a slight variation of the move from Oklahoma. This was told to me by other family members.
Charles and Hattie Botts traded their land in Oklahoma for land in North Dakota. We have documents on the land trade. When they left Oklahoma they were going to North Dakota. While on the way there they met someone who told them it got to 40 degrees below zero in North Dakota during the winter. They talked it over and headed west instead.
