Notes for James Hanna Botts, Civil War Vet:
In the summer of 1880, a census taker visited the farm of James Botts in Sullivan County, Missouri.
Head of the family was James Botts, age 45, born in Illinois. Both of his parents were reported born in Ohio. His wife was Mary Ann, age 42, born in North Carolina as had both of her parents. They had four children and a son-in-law living with them. The children included John W. age 16 born MO; Martha age 10 born MO, Chas. H. age 7 born MO; and their married daughter Rebecca J. 19 born MO. Rebecca was married to James E. Hall, also age 19 born Illinois. Also living with the Botts family was a sister-in-law and two neices. The sister-in-law was 39 year old Anna C. Mathews born NC as were her parents. One neice was Dosie J. Cleaton age 13 b MO. The other was age 20, first name unreadable, last name looked like Busic. (source: National Archives, ED 193, sheet 2, line 36, Sullivan Co, MO 1880.)

Civil War Pension papers states that Mary Ann Warren and James Botts were married at the home of the bride's parents by Peter Setters, Minister of the Gospel. Pension papers dated Dec. 7, 1898 list only Martha A. and Charles H. as living children. Other Civil War records show he was absent without proper authority from February 13, 1863 to June 12th 1863. His papers further state that in March of 1862 he contracted the mumps at Lexington, Kentucky. In August of 1864 he contracted typhoid fever. At Hickman's Mill in January of 1865 he contracted catarrh of the head and lung disease from exposure.

Crawford County , set apart from Allegheny County in 1800 was named in honor of Colonel William Crawford, who was burned at the stake by the indians near Upper Sandusky in Wyandot County, Ohio on June 11, 1782. He was born of Scotch Irish stock in Berkeley County Virginia in 1732. He served as a surveyor under Washington, who was his lifelong friend, and later he became a Captain and a famous Indian-fighter both in the French and Indian War and in the war against Pontiac. In 1767 Captain Crawford settled in western Pennsylvania, just across the Youghiogheny River from Connellsville. Through the Revolution he was in command of a Virginia regiment.

Notes for Daniel Frank Brown:
Found in Family Treemaker CD 23,tree 704 and on LDS Family search.com Daniel started the first electric light company in Milton Oregon and on 14 Feb 1898 sold the company but was hired to run it. In the 1900 census his occupation is listed as'Electrician'.
The following notes were taken from a newspaper article sent to me by The Frazier Farmstead Museum.(dated 1968)
City Light and power observes 80th birthday
When Daniel Frank Brown interrupted his family's migration to California by arriving on the scene a little ahead of schedule,he could hardly have realized the impact the unplanned stop would make.
It would be 24 years before young Brown would turn entrepreneur and begin producing electricity to light his fathers mill and selling the excess to his neighbors for profit.Even then it is doubtful that the young genius would realize his importance to the city founded in the area his family settled.Yet in 1968,that city,Milton Freewater,Ore. would be celebrating the 80th anniversary of their City Light and Power Co.,traceable directly to young Browns ingenuity in 1888.
                  Born Near Fort
The year was 1864 and the Brown family had been migrating to the west coast via the Oregon Trail.Daniel Frank was born at what is now called Old Coles Crossing on the old road to Fort Walla Walla. The family evidentaly decided that with a new baby they needed to settle down and plans for California were abandoned.Other settlers followed suit, and in 1872 William S. Frazier laid out the first subdivision for a town, donating one and a half acers of his own land for the communities first hotel. The next year the town received its first post office and officially became know as Milton.William A. Cole was named the first post master.
In 1874 young Browns father, Walter Scott Brown, became associated in a planing and shingle mill located along the Walla Walla river abot a mile south of where his son had been born.Originaly know as Talbert and Brown the mill became known as Browns Chop Mill in 1879 when Brown took over the entire business.
Young Daniel Frank Brown grew up in his fathers business. He was accustomed to the mill and its operations and aware of it's possibilities. In 1888 he added hard wood cogs to his fathers wooden water wheel and geared it to a water driven turbine to generate electricity. The device was such a success that young Brown not only had enough electricity to light his fathers mill but he was able to sell the remaining electricity generated to his neighbors.
                  Not Simple
It wasn't as simple as it seems however.Young Brown had successfuly overcome only the first obstacle- that of producing the electricity. His next was to market it.Residents were fearful of the new commodity and often prefered their old oil lamps to the modern lighting device.
Daniel Frank persisted however, continuing in his new venture on his own for two years. In 1890 the Milton City Council passed an ordinance voting $5000 to establish an electric power distribution system and Brown, then only 26 years old, joined the city as it's first superintendent. The hand written ordinance,no. 49 in 1889-1894 ordinance book "A" is still legible today.
The pioneer electrical system devised by young Brown is being hailed as the oldest in Oregon and possible the oldest in all the Pacific Northwest. One of the most interesting highlights of young Browns pioneer electrical system was its method for selecting clientele and charging for electricity.A family could not receive electricity unless it received a favorable vote of the city council.Once homes were wired to receive electricity families paid not for the amount of electricity used but for the number of light cords that dropped from the ceilings in their home.In those early years electricity was offered only during the hours between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m.
It's a far cry from the modern electrical system Milton-Freewater residents take for granted today but it was a beginning and each bit of progress must have a beginning.
