Notes for William J. Warren:
On the 30th of September 1850, a census taker by the name of John Dennis visited a Warren family on a farm in Sullivan County, Missouri. Head of the family was 80 year old Hannah Warren born in North Carolina. Her son William and his family lived with her. William was 46, born North Carolina and a farmer. His wife was Catherine also born in North Carolina. They had eight children living with them. The children were all born in North Carolina. The included: Sarah 13, Andrew 12, Mary 11, Catharine 10, Margaret 8, Rebecca P. 5, William 3 and James 1. Also living there was a Margaret Warren age 55 born North Carolina. Margaret was either a daugher-in-law to Hannah or an unmarried daughter.

It appears that William took his family to the west via wagon train to Oregon or Washington as did several of his brothers.

Dent:
The building of the Soo line through Otter Tail county was responsible for the platting of at least five towns on its right of way, and four of these were platted by the Minnesota Loan and Trust Company. Dent, located in section 34, was surveyed by Martin Aa1berg on August 19, 1903.

A census taken on the 19th day of July, 1904, shows a population of one hundred and sixty-nine residents in said territory. This induced the citizens to ask to be incorporated and they at once prepared a petition to that effect. The following legal voters signed the petition: Peter Schumacher, J. E. Besler, H. Winkler, William J. Hoffman, Peter Jonas, A. M. Heck, Fred Lubberman, Henry J. Krekerberg, A. J. Smith, Gust Hazelkauf, William Victor, William Schloesser, Thomas Coughlan, William Ruhoff, John H. Krekelberg, A. M. Murphy, William Albright, J. A. Schmitz, Louis Honer, Wilhelm Hieth, Charles Stender, Frank Hassler, George F. Partridge, R. Harthen, D. J. Cooper, M. D. and R. R. Cooper.

The election on the question of incorporation was held on September 5, 1904, and resulted in twenty-nine votes in favor of the proposition and none against.

The growth of this village has been rather slow as shown by the present census which gives this village a population of approximately two hundred and fifty. Dent is located in the heart of the lake region and this makes a very suitable location for resorts. In consequence the village is alive during the summer months, while in the winter business is not so flourishing. The Homestead elevator does a large business in buying and shipping grain. The banking interests of this community are carried on through the Farmers State Bank.

Dent is twenty-two miles northwest of Henning. It has a German Lutheran and an Evangelical Church, a hotel, grain elevator, feed mill and creamery. Charles M. Perdue is the present postmaster.

The present village officers are as follows: President. G. Wagner; trustees, J. Ruebke, E. Borup and J. S. Elliot; clerk, J. J. Harms; treasurer, E. J. Stoll; justices, C. Perdue and W. J. Brown; constable, Fred Talske.

Dewitt Obert enlisted in the U.S. Army on August 12,1862. He was mustered in at Dubuque ,Iowa as a private in company B 27th regiment in the Iowa infantry. On August 8,1865 he mustered out.A bounty of $25.00 had been paid and he was due $75.00,also $5.61 on a clothing account.His character was described as good.

Notes for Gifford Henry Obert:
Gifford H. Obert at the age of 16 ran away to join the Army.His parents, feeling that he was too young,caught him and brought him home.Some time later,when his father was not at home,he told his mother he had seen a badger in the woods and took his gun to go after it.He just kept going and didn't come home untill the war was over.He had hoped to be a drummer boy but was allowed to carry a musket and fight.
He enlisted November 16,1861and was assigned to company E. 11th regiment of the U.S. infantry.He served in General Mc Clellen's Army for the duration of the war,re-enlisting when his three year term was up.
When the war was over he came home with a new bride.When his mother went to the door he said," Well Mother it took me a long time to get that badger.

Oscar Obert, born 12 May 1848 in Warren Co, PA; died 19 May 1864 in Simsport, Atchafalaya Bayou, LA.

Notes for Oscar Obert:
Oscar Obert enlisted on January 12,1864 at Decorah Iowa.His age was listed as being age 18 but he would not be 16 untill May 12.His father ,Hartman Obert did sign a consent form.On March 6,1864 he began serving in company B 27th regiment That was in the same company as Dewitt was serving in.The brothers planed on staying togeather for the duration of the war.Shortly after his reunion with Dewitt,Oscar became ill with pneumonia and was placed on a hospital boat at Atchafalaya Bayou. Dewitt was allowed to stay and nurse Oscar during his illness.On May 19,1864,seven days after he turned16 and after being in the service less than three months Oscar died of complications of pneumonia.Dewitt make a wooden coffin for his brother,dug his grave and buried him.

Orange Lovett Obert, born 30 May 1851 in Illinois; died 18 Aug 1866 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Notes for Orange Lovett Obert:
Orange Lovett Obert disappeared while helping his father take a load of hay to Lansing. The only thing the family could figure out was that Lovett had crawled to the rear of the load and dropped off unbeknown to his father.Attempts to find him ended with failure.There was a lot of speculation as to what happened to him.They figured he had joined the Army.They contacted the Army and no record of him was found at that time.The family continued to consider him alive and in 1889 when his mother applied for a pension due her through the service of her son Oscar she listed Orange L. as one of her living children.
In 1971 as Myrl Obert Tribble was writing a book about the Obert Family,on the slight chance she might learn something,she wrote the national archives asking for the war record of Orange Lovett Obert.This is what she found.Lovett Obert enlisted at Dubuque Iowa August 18,1866.Assigned to regiment 16 Company G.Infantry.Died September 9,1866 of cholera in Atlanta Georga.The civil war was officialy over at that time but the union army was there trying to maintain order during the reconstruction of Atlanta.Cholera was rampant.The family considered this to be their Lovett.He had lied about his age. He was only 15.He was only in the service 22 days.Not wanting to be found he probably didn't list next of kin so they wern't notified of his death.
