Originally the Crossen family came from Cavan Co., Drumgoon (Cootehill area) Parish, Township of Boagh (Bough) in Ireland. The Tithe Applotment Books shows a Pat Crossin in the Townland of Boagh, Parish of Drumgoon Co. Cavan in 1833. Baptism records obtained from the Co. Cavan Genealogical Research Centre shows the following children born to Pat Crossan and Ann Nealan; Patrick Crossen baptism (4 April 1830), Hugh Crossen (baptism 8 January 1833), Phillip Crossen (baptism 9 July 1835), Susey Crossen (baptism 11 November 1837) James Crossen (baptism 1 March 1841). Catherine Crossen,(b abt 1828) who married Michael Boyle and lived in Mauch Chuck,Pa area, was not found in Cavan Co Research Centre report It is believed that the Patt Crossen (Crossan) family came to the USA, Mauch Chuck, Pa in 1849 with his sons and daughters. As of yet, no verifiable records for either Patt or his wife, Ann Nealan Crossen have been found in the USA. Phillip Crossen's 1912 obituary indicates he came to Wisconsin from Mauch Chuck (now Jim Thrope), Pa. The U.S. Census for 1850 Carbon Co., Mauch Chuck Township, Pa. shows brothers Pat (age 25), Phillip (age 13) and Hugh Crossen (age 20) living with a Murty Crossen (age 22 - head of house hold), and a William Crossen (age 29). Murty and William were proably either cousins or uncles? Pat Crossen (b1830) had sons named Murty and William. Could it be they were named for the Murty and William listed above? Who is this Murty? Naturalization records at the Carbon Co. courthouse in Jim Thorpe, Pa shows that a Murty Crossen age 22 applied for naturalization on Dec 6, 1851 indicating that he arrived from Liverpool on Apr 1847 and that he was a native of Cavan Co., Ireland. A Murty Crossen was also found in Idaho censuses for 1870, 1880 and 1900. Murty died in Placerville in 1904; a grave picture, shown below, says he came from Cavan Co., Ireland. Hugh Crossen's Will says that Hugh owned mines in Idaho; did the mines come from Murty who was listed as a miner on the 1880 and 1900 censuses? Hugh Crossen’s Will also did not list Murty or William as his siblings. Sons Pat, James, Phillip and daughter Susan moved to Ridgeway area, Iowa Co., Wisconsin in the mid 1850s. A daughter named Catherine (b abt 1829), married Michael Boyle and stayed in Mauch Chuck, Pa; she was not mentioned by Cavan Co. Research Centre. However Catherine Boyle was listed in Hugh Crossen’s 1907 Will along with Pat, Phillip, James, and Susan Boylan. Catherine Boyle, Susan Boylan and Patrick Crossen were listed as deceased in Hugh’s will. The 1855 Iowa County Census for Wisconsin, Ridgeway, copy shown below, shows that a William Crossen (Crassen) as head of household, with three other people who were all born outside of the US. Who is this William, he does not show up anywhere else? Wisconsin, Iowa Co. land records shows a Pat Crossen obtaining land in 1854 and 1858. Unresolved issues; Where are Pat and Ann Crossen and their children Catherine, Susan and James in the 1850 USA census? There is also a grave in St Bridget’s Cemetery near Ridgeway for a Patrick Crossen who died Mar 17, 1852, which is near both possible sons Pat and Phillip Crossen graves. The Inscription on this grave says "he lived 67 years, gone but not forgotten". Could this be the father?? See last photo below. There is Ann McNally listed on 1870 census with Susan and John Boylan, age 60, born in Ireland, who I believe is Ann Nealan Crossen. In 1880 she show up as Ann Boylan, age 70, which I believe is a mistake. If Pat Crossen died in1852 then Ann could have remarried but no record of Ann McNally can be found Tree also includes Nielsen's Family (Neilssen) from Horsens, Denmark, Fruin's and Jakeman's families from Oxfordshire CO. in England, Stowell's family from Plymouth, Mass., USA. The Stowell's have relatives going back to 1066 AD in England (Battle of Hastings) |
