Obituary---Crossen (Dodgeville Chronicle Paper, Jan 28, 1912)

Phillip Crossen, one of the old settlers of Ridgeway, passed away on Jan. 17, 1912, of heart failure at his home six miles south of Ridgeway at the age of 74 years. His age would be 78, if born in 1834. \\
Mr. Crossen was born in County Cavan, Ireland, in 1838(1834), and came to this country when 15 years old1849-1853??, with his father, brothers and sisters and settled in Mock-Junk (Mauch Chuck, now Jim Thrope), Penn. No mention is made of his mother ,Ane Nealan. Later he came to Ridgeway and took up land. He came with or after his brother Pat in the 1850s, Wisconsin land records show Pat obtaining land in 1858.\\\\\\
On Dec. 30, 1862 he was united in marriage to Miss Catherine Ashe by the parish priest, Rev McGann of Mineral Point. to this union eleven children were born, two of whom have proceeded him to eternity, Margaret (Bohan), ten years ago and Michel Micheal in infancy. He is survived by his wife and children Philip, Maurice. Hughie, Mary and Katie at home, James of Blue Mounds, John of Chicago, Patrick of Cleary City, Alaska, and Mrs. Frank Annie Saurer of Oregon, Ill., all of whom but Patrick were present at the funeral.       The deceased will be greatly missed as he was of such a cheerful disposition, always having a pleasant word for everyone. As a neighbor he was very kind, always willing to lend a helping hand. He was very devoted husband and a tender father; he lead a good christian life, always living up to the rights of the church. He was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him. Plans had been made for celebrating the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Crossen which would have taken place Dec. 30, 1912.

Patrick Crossen Obituary-- Dodgeville Chronicle July 1916

On Thursday, July 13, 1916, funeral services were held for Patrick Crossen at St, Bridget's Church in the village of Ridgeway. He was seized with pneumonia, the illness lasting six days, death occurring on April 26 at St Joseph's Catholic hospital at Fairbanks, Alaska. Deceased was resident of Cleary City, Alaska.

Patrick Crossen was born on April 5, 1866, on the old homestead seven miles south of Ridgeway. In the fall of 1885 he went West to make his fortune, then a young of nineteen years, and in the year of 1893 went to Douglas, Alaska, remaining there until going to the Klondike in 1898. After some years in the gold fields, he made a trip to the States (1908), returning to Ridgeway and visiting at the home of his parents Mr. and Mrs Phillip Crossen where he renewed many boyhood friendships. After some months the spell of the Yukon again became insistent and he returned to Alaska.

During all the thirty years of his absence his home was first in his thoughts and every month, weather permitting, his mother received a letter from that far-away land. He will be greatly missed by those whom he leaves to sorrow for him. He was preceded to eternity by sister Margaret (Bohan) in 1902 and his father in 1912. He is mourned by his mother, brothers and sisters, Mrs. Cathrine Crossen of Ridgeway, James of Blue Mounds, John of Chicago, Mrs F.E.(Annie) Sauer of Oregon, Ill., and Philip, Maurice, Hughie, Mary and Kathryn at home. His last wishes were that he be laid beside his father, accordingly, his wishes were carried out. High Mass was celebrated by Rev. FR. Wrenn and burial took place in the Catholic cemetery. Pallbearers are Hugh and Patrick Boylan, James and Owen Crossen, Thomas Lynch and James Ashe, all his cousins. ( Don't how the Boylans would be 1st cousins, Susan Crossen ( Daughter of Pat and Mary) married a Boylan?)

JAMES CROSSEN

James A. Crossen was born in 1841 in County Caven, Ireland, and when 9 years old, he came to America with his parents. The family settled in Pennsylvania at that time. In 1859, he located at Dodgeville, Iowa County, Wisconsin, and later married Bridget Hand in Wisconsin. When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in the Third Wisconsin Cavalry, and served four years with the Union Army.

His older brother, Hugh Crossen, came west in the mid-1870s, and lived at Horse Plains and in Missoula County for many years before moving to Choteau, Montana, and was a cattleman during his years in Montana. Hugh Crossen died November 2, 1907, at 72 years of age. (41)

James Crossen came west to Montana in the 1870s, and worked for a time for Major Peter Ronan. He came to Horse Plains in 1879, and homesteaded on a quarter section of land about three miles north of Plains, which became one of the finest ranches in the valley. He and his large family lived on this ranch for more than 25 years. To those who knew him, he was an honest man, a genial companion, and a true friend. James A. Crossen died April 3, 1910. (42) His wife died in 1936. Many of their descendants still live in Sanders County.

DEATH OF JAMES CROSSEN

James Crossen, one of the first settlers of the Plains Valley, and a highly respected citizen, died at his home near Plains last Sunday morning. He leaves a wife, three daughters and four sons. Miss Maggie Smith of Thompson, a grand daughter, and her father Deputy Sheriff Smith attended the funeral services.

James Crossen was born in the County Cavan, Ireland, March 20, 1841 and came to America with his parents when 9 years of age. They first settled in Pennsylvania, moving to Wisconsin in 1859 and locating in Dodgeville, where he met and married his wife, Bridget Hand. After a few years struggling in the stumps of that state he left his family and came direct to Montana and worked for several years for Major Ronan, then Indian Agent on the Flathead Reservation. In 1879 he came to the Plains Valley and located on a ranch three miles north of Plains on Clark's Creek, where he has lived since, raised a large family and prospered. Mr. Crossen's family consisted of his wife and the following children: Margaret, deceased, wife of Len Smith, Frank and James Crossen, who for the past 10 years have been engaged in the livery business in Great Falls, Mrs. David Clark, Mrs. Wm. Clark, both of Plains. Miss Mollie Crossen, Andrew, William and John Crossen, who deeply mourn his loss.

IN MEMORIUM: JAMES CROSSEN

Last Sunday witnessed the passing away of James Crossen, one of the gallant soldiers who fought for the preservation of the Union nearly half century ago, and later became one of the sturdy pioneers whose hardihood and enterprise started Montana on the road to it's present greatness. He had been in bad health for a long time, but on Saturday he seemed to be much better than usual, and some friends who visited him were gratified to see him apparently improving in health. Later, however, he began to feel worse, and a doctor was summoned. He could do nothing, however, and Sunday morning James Crossen died. The funeral took place from the Catholic Church on Tuesday morning, and was attended by a large concourse of sorrowing friends. After the celebration of Mass by Rev. Father Lee the members of John A. Logan Post, G.A.R. followed the remains to the cemetery and there held the impressive burial service of the Grand Army of the Republic, closing with the solemn notes of the bugle sounding taps.

James A. Crossen was an Irishman by birth, born in County Cavan in 1841. At the age of nine he came to America with his parents and settled in Pennsylvania first. In 1859 he located at Dodgeville, Iowa County, Wisconsin, and there married Miss Bridget Hand. When the Rebellion broke out, he enlisted in the Third Wisconsin Cavalry and served 4 years in the Union Army.

After the war he came out to Montana and worked for several years for Major Ronan who was then Indian Agent on the Flathead Reservation. In 1879 he came to the Plains Valley and homesteaded a quarter-section about 3 miles North of Plains. This is now one of the finest ranches in Western Montana. Here Mr. Crossen has lived for 30 years surrounded by a large and devoted family, and beloved and respected by all who knew him. He left a widow, who lives at the ranch home. Also five sons and three daughters, of whom James and Frank Crossen are in the livery business at Great Falls, while Andrew, William and John Crossen, Miss Mollie Crossen, Mrs. David Clark and Mrs. William Clark are all well-known residents of Plains. Another daughter, Margaret, the wife of L.E. Smith, died suddenly three years ago.

Mr. Crossen, "Uncle Jimmie", as he was affectionately called by his many friends, was an honest man, a genial companion, and a true friend. He had friends all over Western Montana, and the number who came from Missoula, Thompson Falls and elsewhere to pay their last tribute of respect to his memory demonstrated the esteem in which he was held.

The Plainsman joins hands with the rest of the community in sympathy for his bereaved family.
