The marriage date of Co. Thomas Pettus and Elizabeth of 1645 is after the birth of John, who was born in 1635? Was John's mother the wife of Thomas's first marriage?

The Pettus/Petty family spelled their sirname 'any which way'; but they had a favorite first name, Thomas, and a lack of middle names that gives the genealogists fits. (Sometimes a genealogist will assign a middle Thomas to be 'Jr' just to distinguish him from his same named father and son - even though 'Jr' may not exist in any official records.) But THIS Thomas Petty once used 'Jr' to create purposefull confusion:
Two Thomas Pettuses left England in 1637-38. This younger one called himself 'Jr'; the older (Col Thomas) was his uncle, who was born in 1598.
About 1637, the Virginia colonysts petitioned the London Company for help in their struggle with the Indians. Sir John Petty had been a member of the company holding the 3rd charter to Virginia, and probably for sake of his relationship, Col Thomas Petus, then serving on the Continent in the Low Countries during the 30 years war was selected and sent over in command of forty men. About the same time the other Thomas Pettus left for "Parts unknown". There was reason for this vagueness; one of them seemed to have killed a man, and flight may have been the only way to avoid punishment. Six years later in 1643 when England was very busy with Cromwell and his Roundheads it was safe for him (Thomas 'Jr') to slip into Virginia.
