* Crookland's Crook Family History & Archives*

Updated January 20, 2008

Crookland was erected in 1854 in Middlefork Village, Henderson County, Tennessee, by Judge John Crook. It remains a family home and is a center for archiving Crook family materials for two of the major Crook families. Family Crook J originated in England and moved to VA,SC,TN,MS,AL,TX and beyond. Family Group L originated in Scotland and moved to NC,KY,TN,TX and beyond. We are descended from both lines and are part of the land grant settlement of Henderson Co. TN in 1821.

Crookland became the seat of a large cotton seed business program beginning in 1909 with the sale of Crook's Prolific White Giant Seed Corn for the Crook Bros Store in Middlefork, Tn. Later Crook's Half & Half Hi-Bred Cotton was added when Prof. W. C. Crook originated the variety in 1916. In 1928, Crook Bros sold more cottonseed than anyother business in the US and by the 1950's had sold seed as far away as the British Honduras. 1916 also saw the birth of the successor company, W.C. & R.L. Crook Seed Company, which sold their Half & Half cotton seed, and later Empire and Delta Pine seeds until closure in 1959. T.J. Crook & Sons and Crook De-Linting Company survived until 1972 when the family suffered a number of deaths in traffic accidents.

Crookland archives many of the old seed business records, seed sacks, photos and advertisements for the Crook's Half & Half Cotton, and the Prolific White Giant Seed Corn. Advertisements for the Corn can be found in the Progressive Farmer as late as 1948.
