daughter: Elmyna E.

and Sallie E. Conner.
Jonathan and Lucy are buried in the Hopper Family Cemetery
because one of their daughters, Emily married William Hopper. There are several
Hoppers & Conners buried there. One daughter, Sarah (Sallie) married John
Conner. It is a small cemetery with
only 15 to 20 people buried there. Hopper Cemetery (c 1846) 14 miles NE of
Ripley, Tippah Co, MS; 6 miles SE
Tiplersville on Eugene Hopper farm, near Faulkner, MS
from W.M Crook's Autobiography - We know from the 1850
Tippah Co, MS census that William was born in 1823 in SC, Elmira in 1827 in SC,
and Sarah (Sallie) in 1828 in SC. The census shows that the youngest child
Emily E. was born in 1831 in TN. So it looks like the family did not migrate to
TN until after 1828. They do show up on the 1830 Henderson Co, TN census.
His son William A. Crook was married in Tippah County in
1842. The four youngest children migrated with the parents to Tippah County.
However the family does not show up on the 1840 Tippah County census.

Marriage Notes for JONATHAN
CROOK and LUCY
ARNOLD:
Jonathan was reared in SC and moved along with his
brother, Jeremiah, to Henderson County, TN about the time the Indians were
moved to the Indian Territory in what is now Oklahoma, probably around 1825 as
his five older children were all born in SC. The two youngest girls were born
in TN. He then moved with his wife, Lucy and the four youngest children,
William, Sarah, Emily, and Elmina to Tippah County, MS. Tippah County was just
over the line from Henderson County, TN. Jonathan and Lucy Arnold Crook lived
there the rest of their lives and are buried in Ripley, Tippah, MS. The four
children who went with him also stayed in the area. The three older children,
John, James, and Polly were already married an remained in Henderson County,
TN. Their father gave each of them a homestead adjoining each other. John eventually went to Tippah County and
then went with some of his children to Texas.
W. Clay Crook writes, "Your Jonathan Crook also shows
up in the 1830 TN census, whereas my Jeremiah doesn't show until 1840. Some of
the older historians in the county who knew the grandchildren of the pioneers
say Jonathan and Jerry arrived by 1821
and then Jerry went back to SC to bring his family by 1836. I know
through surviving deeds that Jonathan Crook went to Tippah County, MS in the
1836 period, some of his children following in 1848 and 1858. " Note from
PAB- I cannot find Jonathan listed on the 1840 Tippah Co, MS census.
Tombstone inscription says wife of Jonathan - Wiley M.
Crook's autobiography (pg 6) says they married in SC.

Mabel Crook Gamewell in the 1970's.
W. Clay Crook writes in his notes on the autobiography
"James W. Crook is buried at the Old Frame Meeting House Cem. (Clarks
Creek primitive Baptist Church) which is located on the Jonathan Crook
Plantation, currently site of the Lavaugham & Sylvia Grissom home &
farm.
In an e-mail message dated 26 June 1999, W. Clay Crook
writes, "James Wiley Crook is buried in a little forest clad cemetery
about 3 miles south of me on the old Jonathan Crook plantation along with some
of the others, the rest of the Crooks, Arnolds, Dodds are at Unity Church, two
miles south of my home, the little Baptist Church Wiley M. Crook mentioned
moving in 1858 is still here, bigger and bricked now and a very large cemetery
for the county. Wiley's mother, who married 2nd Joel F. Hurt, are buried here
as well."

Notes for ELIZA C. HODGES:
Wiley M. Crook mentions in his autobiography about
visiting his mother in TN several times, after he moved to Texas in 1875. Three of her children by James Wiley Crook,
Wiley Mitcham, Elijah Jonathan & Susan migrated to Texas. Only the youngest
daughter, Nancy James, born just two weeks before her father's death remained
in the Henderson County, TN area. After her first husband's death, Eliza
married Joel F. Hurt and they had 6 children.
Year of birth from Unity Cemetery, Henderson Co, TN
Cemetery book. The book lists her as E. G. Hurt, wife of J. F. Hurt, Dec 28,
1905 aged 79 years, 2 mos, 25 days. This would make her born in 1826. Assume
the G. should be a C and the transcriber thought it was a G. The Chester County
cemetery book lists her as Elizabeth Hurt, Oct 3, 1835 -Dec 28, 1905. Both
books list her death date as the same. The name Elizabeth listed in Chester
County is confusing as she has a sister named Elizabeth. Both of these books
took their information from the tombstone so I do not know which one is
correct.
DOD from Unity Cemetery, Henderson County cemetery book
and also Chester County cemetery book. Both books have the same death date.
Eliza C. Hodges Crook Hurt is buried next to her second
husband, Joel F. Hurt. This information is from the Henderson Co, TN cemetery
book. Unity Cemetery is in Chester Co, but prior to 1879 that part of Chester
Co. was in Henderson Co. The cemetery
is located 14 miles south of Lexington, Henderson, TN on Hwy 22A. It is
probably closer to Jacks Creek and Henderson, Chester, TN.

Marriage Notes for JAMES
CROOK and ELIZA
HODGES:
James Wiley moved with his family in 1831 at the age of 15
to Henderson Co, TN. He married first Sarah Thomas and had three daughters by
her. Sarah died in about 1840 and he then married Eliza C. Hodges in 1843. He
and Eliza had 4 children. James died early at the age of 33, leaving his wife
with two girls (one girl died young) from his first marriage and 4 children by
Eliza to raise. At his death James
owned three Negroes and a nice little homestead of 160 acres given him by his
father, Jonathan Crook when he moved to Tippah County, MS. He had six living children when he died. His
estate was divided equally among the children and Eliza. Eliza chose to take a
child's portion of the estate. The two daughters from the first marriage went to
live with their uncle, John P. Thomas. Eliza, with the help of relatives, kept
her family together and managed the farm. In 1853 Eliza married Joel F. Hurt
and they had 6 children together. This information from Wiley M. Crook's
autobiography on page 6.

1840-45. She was 22 in 1850 so she was born abt 1828.

CROOK (JAMES WILLIAMS4,
JONATHAN3, JAMES S.2,
JAMES1) was
born February 06, 1846 in Henderson Co, TN, and died July 30, 1907 in Granbury,
Hood, TX. He married (1) CALLIE F. FAGG1. She was born 1851 in Center Point,
Henderson, TN, and died Abt. 1874 in Henderson Co, TN. He married (2) MARTHA
DANIELS Abt. 1875 in Montgomery Co,
AR. She was born July 29, 1852, and
died September 02, 1926 in Cresson, Johnson, TX.
Notes for ELIJAH JONATHAN CROOK:
Elijah Jonathan married Callie F. Fagg on September 22,
1868. He and his older brother Wiley Mitchum Crook married on the same day. He
and Callie had one son, Waymon Chappel Crook.
When his first wife, Callie died abt 1874, he moved to Oden, Montgomery
Co, AR and married a widow, Martha Daniels who had three children. They then
had 7 children of their own. They raised all 10 children on a big farm in Oden,
AR. In 1875 he was living in Arkansas as W. M. Crook states in his
autobiography that he and his family stayed with them for several weeks when
they were moving to Johnson County, Texas. Elijah wanted Wiley to stay in
Arkansas, but Wiley states that he did not like that part of the country. Wiley
mentions his brother again when Elijah dies in Texas and he comes back
from AR to the funeral. Elijah moved
his family to Cresson, TX as he and his wife Martha D. Crook and two of their
children and spouses, Susan R. and Claude F. Shirley and Elbert and Carrie
Shirley Crook are all buried on the same plot in Cresson Cemetery, Johnson
County, TX. Sometime between 1902 & 1906 E. J. and Martha moved to Texas
and lived close to Wiley Crook who was Elijah Jonathan's older brother. It is unclear exactly when they moved to
Texas but apparently all the children except James, who was already married and
living in Washington State and Waymon, his son by Callie Fagg, who remained in AR
went with them to Texas. Bernice Crook Harper says she knows for sure that they
were still living on the farm at Oden, AR when her parents, Waymon Chappel
Crook and Edna Carr married in 1901. It seems very strange at that age, abt 60,
that he would up and move all his family to a state that he was not familar
with just because his brother lived there. My father, James Clarence Crook
remembers Aunt Mattie very well and especially two of her children, Hulda and
Elbert.
Bernice Crook Harper remembers that Martha Daniels Crook
came back to AR from Texas by train in 1912 to visit her three Daniels'
children, Sally, Danuel and Wesley who lived in Oden and her step son, Waymon
Chappel Crook and his family who lived in Oakwood, Montgomer, AR. Her daughter, Hannah and husband Alvin
McWhorter came with her.

to live with her sons in Hico, Texas. When her brother Wiley died in 1938 his

Pinson, TN. Jennie must be her nickname and she must have married a Mr. Brewer
at some point. W. M. Crook states in his autobiography that she married John
Brown in 1869. Her nickname in childhood was "Nannie". Pinson is in Madison County which is
adjacent to Henderson County.

Ellen first met her husband to be when she was only 14

needed a new pair of boots and it was suggested by his stepfather, Joel F. Hurt
that he go see R. L. Hendrix as Mr. Hendrix had a pair of new boots that were
too small for him. When Wiley arrived, Mr. Hendrix was not home and he had
already sold the boots. However, Wiley did meet two of his daughters Ellen and
Tabitha. Wiley M. Crook writes in his autobiography, page 37, that he was very
attracted to the younger sister, Ellen even though she was only 14 years old.

Marriage Notes for WILEY
CROOK and ELLEN
HENDRIX:
Wiley Mitcham Crook was born September 17, 1844 in
Henderson County, Tennessee. His parents were
James Wiley Crook (1817-1850) and Eliza C. Hodges (1826-1905). He was
the oldest of four children. His siblings were Elijah Jonathan, Susan E. and Nancy
James. He had 3 half sisters by his father's first wife, Sarah Thomas and 6
half brothers and sisters by his mother's 2nd husband, Joel F. Hurt. He
volunteered for the Confederate army at the age of 17, in 1862. He was in many
battles during the war and returned home to Tennessee in May 1865 and farmed
240 acres with his brother, Elijah. He married
Ellen Eliza Hendrix (1851-1903) on September 22, 1868 when he was 24 and
she was 17. He only had a country school education. On August 15, 1869 their
first son was born, Lee Franklin Crook. On November 8, 1871 their second son,
James Silas Crook was born. After living in Tennessee all his life, he sold his
140 acres of the family farm and moved to Cass County, MO. in December 1874. He
rented a 40 acre farm but did not do well in Missouri and on June 7, 1875 Wiley Mitcham moved his family in a
two-horse wagon to Johnson County, Texas which is where he had intended to go
when he sold his farm in 1873. On the way to Texas he visited his brother,
Elijah in Montgomery County, AR for several weeks. His brother wanted him to
settle in Montgomery County, but Wiley did not like that part of the country.
When he arrived in Johnson County, he stayed with a second cousin, I. J. L. Pearson who had moved from
Henderson County. In fact Ira Pearson had lived with Wiley's family during the
year 1852, after Wiley's father had died. Wiley was 30 years old and Ellen was 23. He says in his autobiography
that 1875 was a lost year and he very much regretted not coming to Texas as
soon as he sold his farm. He then rented a farm and after several very hard
years he was able to buy a prairie farm, but life was still very hard. Two more
children were born: Mary Loula Crook on October 21, 1877 and John Wiley Crook
on May 8, 1882. In 1887 they sent their oldest son , Lee Franklin to high
school. During the year 1887, two railroads were built, crossing seven miles
from the Crook home. W. M. Crook put in a store and established a post office
in Cresson, Texas. In 1889 he sold his prairie farm and bought 80 acres near
Cresson. In 1894 they sent their only daughter to the Baptist University at
Waco, Texas. On May 4, 1895 she died of pneumonia in Waco. Wiley Mitcham, his
wife, Ellen and his oldest son, Lee Franklin were at her bedside when she died.
Their oldest son, Lee Franklin attended Weatherford College in nearby
Weatherford, Texas and then went on to graduate from Vanderbilt University in
Nashville, TN. He was a medical doctor. They sent their youngest son, John
Wiley to College Station, TX to attend Texas A & M College. Wiley Mitcham
helped found the Cresson Baptist Church in 1896. He also served as Postmaster for the Cresson Post Office. His
wife, Ellen Eliza Hendrix died at the
age of 52 on October 3, 1903. In 1905 W. M. Crook started corresponding with an
old friend from Tennessee, Mrs. H. L. Barham. He had learned from his sister,
Susan Crook Barham of Hico, TX that she was a widow and had two children age 16
and 11 years old, Alva and Curtis and another daughter who was already married.
They visited each other at a Confederate Reunion near Star City, Arkansas on
July 21, 1906. They married at Texarkana, TX in January 1907 and moved to her
home near Cornerville, AR. He returned to Texas at Christmas of 1907 and in the
summer of 1907 he was called back to Texas at the death of his brother, Elijah,
who is buried in Cresson, TX His
sister, Susan E. Crook Barham of Hico, TX died in 1908 but he did not return
for her funeral. Susan is buried next to her husband, R. H. Barham in Chester
County, TN, Ross Cemetery. On August 5, 1912, his son James Silas Crook died.
He returned to Cresson, TX but did not arrive in time to see his son alive. He returned to Texas at least one
more time to attend a Confederate reunion in Dallas in 1922. So after more than
30 years in Texas he moved to Arkansas and lived there until his death, at the
age of 93, in Cornerville, AR. He died February 7, 1938 after being ill for
nearly a year. He and his second wife, Hulda lived the last few years of his
life with Hulda's daughter in Cornerville, AR. W.M. Crook is buried in Cresson,
TX next to his first wife, Ellen Eliza
Hendrix, who is the mother of his 4 children. Wiley M. Crook and Hulda Dodds
Barham were actually first cousins on his father's side. He does not mention
this fact in his autobiography but his grandson, James Clarence Crook knew this
and W. Clay Crook also told me.
THE CAPTURED FLAG
W. M. Crook captured a flag from the 57th Indiana regiment
at the battle of Franklin, TN. The flag was in his possession when Company I,
13th Tennessee infantry regiment surrendered on April 26, 1865. There were 9
present at the surrender. In August 1884 he attended a Confederate Reunion at
Cleburne, TX. He exhibited the flag he had captured at Franklin, TN with the hopes of returning the flag to the
Indiana regiment. In September of 1884 he traveled, along with some of his
Texas confederate friends, to Kokomo, Indiana, home of Colonel Blanch, who
commanded the 57th. The Indiana regiment had a reunion and the flag that had
been captured 20 years earlier was returned. It was the first captured flag of
the Civil War to be returned. W. M. Crook was presented with a $20 dollar gold
piece for arranging the return of the flag. This medal went to his oldest son,
Dr. L. F. Crook and then to James Clarence Crook and will be passed on to
Jimmie Flinn Crook and to his son Richard Kynan Crook always going to the
oldest son who has a son carrying the Crook name.
A double wedding was performed by a primitive Baptist
preacher, Riley Reid marrying Wiley M. Crook and Ellen Eliza Hendrix and Elijah
J. Crook (Wiley's brother) and Callie Fagg in Henderson County, TN. This
information from autobiography on page 43.
Notes for HULDA DODDS:
According to W. Clay Crook, Hulda was a first cousin to
Wiley Mitchum Crook. They married when both were probably around 60 and lived
together about 30 years until Wiley's death in 1938. On page page 50 of the
autobiography Wiley talks about meeting Hulda and calls her an old friend from
TN. Strange that he does not say she is his first cousin.

TX. She was born September 10, 1885 in
Cave Spring, Floyd, GA, and died May 05, 1980 in Bowie, Montague, TX.
Notes for LEE FRANKLIN CROOK:
DR. LEE FRANKlIN CROOK
Lee Franklin Crook was born August 15, 1869 in Henderson
County, Tennessee. His parents were
Wiley Mitcham Crook (1844 - 1938) and Ellen Eliza Hendrix (1851 - 1903). The Crook family moved to
Johnson County, Texas in 1875 when Lee was 6 years old. He had two brothers,
James Silas and John Wiley and one sister, Mary Loula. The family eventually
moved from the prarie farm out in the country to Cresson, Texas. Lee Franklin
graduated from Weatherford College in Weatherford, Texas and from Vanderbilt
University in Nashville, Tenn. with a degree in medicine. After receiving his
medical degree he returned to Cresson to set up his medical practice. He was an active member of the Cresson
Baptist Church, serving as Superintendent of the Sunday School in 1900 with an
average attendance of 43. He married Rosa Lavenia Hardesty and they had one
son, Lee FranklinCrook, Jr. born April
16, 1902 in Cresson, Texas. Rosa Lavenia Hardesty Crook died in 1905 with
tuberculosis, in a Fort Worth, TX
hospital, after a lingering illness. Lee Frank's second wife was
Margaret Addie Bobo (l885 - 1980). They
married on April 12, 1909 and had one son, James Clarence Crook, born November
5, 1910 in Cresson, Texas. In 1911, Dr.
Crook moved his family to Bellevue, Texas in Clay County. A nurse in Ft. Worth named Mrs. Manton,
urged Dr. Crook to move to Bellevue, although Bellevue already had two doctors,
Dr. Hood and Dr. Holmes. In 1911 Bellevue was a much more prosperous town than
Cresson. The town had 2 grocery and dry goods stores combined, 2 drug stores, a
bank, a dentist, 2 doctors, a gin, shoe repair shop, blacksmith, lumber yard,
wagon yard and several churches. It was the intention of Dr. Crook and his wife
to eventually move to Wichita Falls, TX a much larger town, about 40 miles west
of Bellevue. However, he never made this move and lived in Bellevue the rest of
his life. He was president of the Bellevue School Board for many years and was very active in the First Baptist
Church of Bellevue. He was also a very respected man in the community. He suffered
a stroke a few years before he died and the stroke hindered his practice of
medicine. He suffered a heart attack and died April 20, 1945 at the age of 75.
He is buried in the Bellevue Cemetery next to his wife Margaret Addie Bobo
Crook. Addie lived to be 94 years old and died on May 5, 1980.
Buried on the same plot in the Bellevue Cemetery is his
son L.F. Crook, Jr. and his wife Millie (Pat) Crook. And his grand
daughter-in-law, Marie Fletcher Crook. Also to be buried on the same plot is
James Clarence and Alma Lee Flinn Crook and their son Jimmie Flinn Crook.

The family bible recorded Margaret's middle name as Addie
and she was called Addie. However, when she was an adult she must have changed
her name to Adeline as that is the way it appears on her son's birth
certificate. She was just 3 months old when the family moved to Texas and she
was next to the youngest of 9 children. She married Dr. Lee Franklin Crook,
also of Cresson, Texas. Addie was 16 years younger than her husband. They moved to Bellevue, Clay, TX in 1911 where
they lived until their deaths.
Most summers Addie and her son, James would take the train
to Cresson where they would spend two weeks visiting the Bobo and Crook
kinfolks. They got free passes for the train ride as Dr. Crook was the
physician for the railroad.
