of Major James Crump (written about 1904 based on date of birth and her age of 73 at the writing of this letter - ELC)

"At the request of several of the descendants of my Grandfather and his brother-John Crump-I am induced to write this, for their benefit, as well as a desire on my my part. That my children may know something of their Ancestry, which now dates too far back for them to get their information, at the present time, from any one except myself.

"Now at the age of 73 years I am the only descendant of my Grandparents, who know anything of their early history.

"My information came from a dear old aunt, Eva Forest (my father's sister), who loved to entertain the children with stories of her father's service in the Revolutionary War.

"My grandfather - Major James Crump - was borned in Loudon Co'ty, Virginia.

"He was a lad in his teens at the opening of the Revolution and at an early period in the war, he served General Washington on his staff in the capacity of Page. Was afterwards promoted to regular service and ranked as Major at the close of the war in 1781, at which time he was
with the American Troops in North Carolina, serving under General Green - and was present in the battle of Guilford.

"Soon after this date he with his brother John Crump (younger than himself) left Virginia and settled in Montgomery Co'ty N.C. on the Yadkin river making their homes near the narrows of the Yadkin.

" From the time that Major Crumpwas first a citizen of North Carolina he had charge of the Militia of the state and remained in this service untill his death in 1800.

"The original of the above sketch of the Crump Family, written by Larua (Crump) Patrick is in the possession ofr Mrs. W.E. - Mary Elizabeth (Benton) Capel, 2115 West Sisteenth Street, Little Rock, Ark.

"Mrs. Capel's mother was Nancy Woodson Ingram (m. Archibald Carraway Benton) 1837-1819 [sic], a daughter of Mary Crump and her husband Jeremiah Ingram; and granddaughter of Stephen Crump by his first wife, Easley (Probably a Miss) Easley.

"The spelling and arrangement are as in the original. Those portions in parenthesis were written in pencil and evidently not by Mrs. Patrick.
