Notes for T
HOMAS TASKER:
Thomas Tasker's main "claim to fame" is that he was the first Tasker to arrive in New Zealand. Married twice, but also having a mistress, he had many children.
He died at a comparatively young age of 52. His youngest child being born that same year.

Thomas and his wife Elizabeth, and son James, left Liverpool in 1843 and arrived in Freemantle, West Australia 22 March 1843 on the Success. Children born in Freemantle, were Sarah b. 1843, Henry b. 1844. He was employed as a butcher for Curtis of Fremantle. However, the family moved on to Adelaide on 9th January 1845. He joined the Police Force for a short time, before returning to his usual trade as a butcher. Whilst in the police, he took part in a cricket match held in Adelaide in 1850. At about this time, his wife Elizabeth, had charges laid against him for desertion. It was recorded in the Police Gazette as "Wanted known, the whereabouts of Thomas Tasker, of slight build and fair complexion. Known as an old hand for desertion". Shortly after this, Thomas and his children, James, Sarah, and Henry and a young widow Catherine Longman and her child came to NZ. Of Elizabeth we know no more.
They arrived in Nelson where they set up home together in June 1859. Thomas set himself up in a butcher shop in Richmond. His time with Catherine Longman didn't last, as a payment of fifty pounds was paid to her on 7th December 1865.
Just 4 weeks later, Thomas marries again, this time to another young widow, Mary Jane Jordan (nee Primmer) on 9th January 1866. Thomas was 43 and Mary 22. They had 6 children. After Thomas died, Mary remarried Mark Hyland.
Thomas bought up land in Wesport.
