Find Family

In 1816, Peter Culver (b. 1785) immigrated to Canada after serving for five years in the American Army. He enlisted in 1810 and served in the 1st. Regiment, Heavy Artillery under Captain Leonard during the War of 1812. He was captured at the Battle of Queenston Heights and was imprisoned. He was paroled and was returned to Boston, Mass. He served his country until 1815 under the command of Captain Nathaniel Boyle as a Sgt. in the Heavy Artillery at Sackett's Harbor, New York.He eventually came to settle in Rainham Centre, Norfolk County (now Haldimand), Ontario, Canada. He and his wife Sarah (nee Miller), formerly of Pennsylvania, raised their family in this small community until his death in 1880. Peter was a blacksmith and the family had close ties to the Baptist Church. Much of the family still reside in the same area of southern Ontario, where Peter chose to raise his own family. This research also includes other families, but foremost, the Reichhelds. The Reichhelds immigrated to Canada later than Peter, directly from Europe, and although the families were of different religions and languages, the families merged through marriages. The research continues to investigate Peter and Sarah's roots in America, and his military background. We are open to any information and willing to help others in their search.
