Notes for J
AMES ROLLO MCKAY:
James joined the Royal Engineers Signal Section for a four year period. He was in France until WW I ended in 1919. He still had two years to go on his enlistment and was sent to India with the Royal Engineers and worked as a telegrapher. After his enlistment was over, he then worked as a civilian for the Egyptian State Railways and Telegraphs as a radio operator in Alexandria. He was discharged from the job and returned to Scotland to find that the whole family (except for his father and one sister, Nell) had moved to America. James was a very impatient man. He could have waited two weeks to get a permanent visa to emigrate to America, but he preferred to get on a boat to Canada right away. After landing in Canada, he was met by his brother David and the two of them rode to New Jersey on David's motorcycle. So he was an original Wet-Back. He went to work immediately and was never without a job. He was in the textile printing business and was finally made boss printer. He never applied for citizenship until FDR pardoned all the European immigrants that had been in the U. S. and married and had families. In 1946, he applied for citizenship and passed the test. His wife, Florence, also became a U. S. citizen at that time. From the family tree of Sheila Webber.
