REDERICK CAMPMAN:
[quick3.FTW]

One of twenty-seven freeholder petitioners asking the Grand Jury of Clearfield County to grant the Town of Wallaceton all the rights of an Incorporated Borough. This petition was filed January 16, 1873. Campman served as treasurer from 1878 through 1879 and again in 1885. He was the Burgess in 1881 and the assessor in 1883.

A Wallaceton Borough Tax List dated 1874 shows Frederick Campman owning House 7 (see Wallaceton Borough Atlas, page 11 Wallaceton Borough History by Melvin L. Bock), 2 horses, buggy, two cows, and a watch.

The following account taken from Volume V, page 74 of the History of the Pennsylvania Volunteers by Samuel Bates describes the involvement of the 88th PA Infantry Regiment toward the end of the war. It is likely that Frederick Campman was one of the 200 conscripts mentioned at the beginning of Bates' regimental description.

"On the 11th of November [1864] two hundred conscripts were received, making about three hundred and fifty officers and men on duty. On the 7th of December the regiment joined in the movement on the Jerusalem Plank Road, extending to the South Side Railroad. On the 5th of February, 1865, it moved towards Hatchers Run, and on the 6th, after a severe fight of about two hours near Dabney's Mill, was repulsed. the next day it encountered the enemy at Hatchers Run and suffered severe loss, Lieutenants Sylvester H. Martin and Edward L. Gilligan being among the severly wounded."

"The regiment went into camp near Hatchers Run and remained until the 29th of March, when it joined in active operations, being hotly engaged and losing Lieutenant Daniel J. Lehman killed, and Lieutenant M'Callicher wounded. On the 1st of April it was again engaged, losing captain Thomas J. Koch killed. With the Fifth Corps it participated in the marching and fighting which ensued, until the 9th, when Lee surrendered and it commenced the homeward march. Passing through Petersburg, Manchester, and Richmond, it proceeded to Washington where, on the 30th of June, 1865, it was mustered out of service."
