Notes for E
RNST LUEBEN:
Ernst and Wilhelmina came to Canada in the early 1860's. Their religion was noted as Lutheran. They were some of the first German settlers. The Government gave early settlers Crown Land to farm. Ernst and Wilhelmina settled on the 4th Concession of Sullivan Township, Lot 19 N.S. and Lot 19N. As Early pioneers they endured many hardships and relied heavily on one another .

St. Peter's Lutheran Church records sate that Ernest, Wilhelmina and Johann came to Canada from Mecklenburg, Germany before settling in Sullivan Twp. Ernest is indicated as signing the constitution again in 1901 at St. Peter's Lutheran, Sullivan Twp.

The families would gather together in a Neighbours home each Sunday for church worship. In the spring of 1862 the first Lutheran services were held in the home of Ernst Lueben. The service was conducted by Rev. Behrens, who came on horseback from Normandy Township to conduct the service. Nine families gathered at the Lueben homestead.

The log home is still standing in 1998. It was moved from the original site, but still stands on the south half of Lot 19, Concession 4, Sullivan Twp., just west of Cedardale Cemetery.

In 1876 Wilhelmina gave birth to a son Samuel. They both died in 1876 and are buried in Cedardale Cemetery. Johann Lueben, Ernst son, was married Caroline Pamperine on April 28, 1872.

Ernst remarried on July 20, 1877 to Emma Schwandt, the daughter of August and Fredericke Schwandt. Ernst and Emma were married in the Evangelical Association Church, Hanover, Ontario. Attendants were John Solomon Schwandt and Mary Schwandt. At the time of their marriage, Emma was 22 years old and Ernst was 58. They resided on Ernst's farm on the 4th Concession of Sullivan Township. They had four children, William, John, Emma and Wilhelmina.

Church records indicate that the Lueben left the Lutheran Church in 1876 and joined the Methodist Church in Mooresburg, Ontario.

In 1882, tragedy struck the family when William died on January 3rd, at the age of 4 year and 2 months. John also died on January 6th, at the age of 6 years, 4 months. The cause of death on the certificates was listed as scarlet fever. They are both buried in Cedardale Cemetery. Emma and Ernst raised their two daughter, Emma and Wilhelmina on the family farm.

In May of 1901 they again joined St. Peters Lutheran Church, in Sullivan Twp.

Ernst died on September 4, 1904, at the age of 85 years, 10 months and 6 days.[Brøderbund Family Archive #118, Ed. 1, Canadian Genealogy Index, 1600s - 1900s, Date of Import: Jan 23, 1999, Internal Ref. #1.118.1.50069.16]

Church records show that Emma(Schwandt) Luben was confirmed and turned Lutheran from Methodist on May 16, 1901. Her daughter Emma (Luben) Lipskie was born December 11, 1882 and baptized July 1883. Church records indicate that the Lueben family left the Lutheran Church in 1876 and joined the Methodist Church in Mooresburg, Ontario.

Ernst died on September 4, 1904, at the age of 85 years, 10 months and 6 days. Emma sold the farm in 1912 and moved to Desboro, where she lived in a rented home. In 1914, she bought a home in Desboro, on Lot #16 for $800.00.

While in Desboro Emma attended St. John's, now Faith Lutheran Church. She was a caretaker there for a couple of years at the church. A member of the church recalls an interesting story of axe marks seen on the floor of the entry hall, where Mrs. Emma Lueben use to split wood and kindling for the stove. This notation was taken from the 100th Anniversary Book.

During Emma's later years in Desboro, she would go and to live with her daughter Emma, and son-in-law Albert Lipskie on their farm on the 6th Concession of Sullivan Twp., for the winter. In 1944, Emma Lueben moved to Chesley to make her home with Emma and Albert Lipskie.

Emma Lueben was honored as Chesley's oldest mother on Mother's Day, May 1949. Emma died on July 22, 1949 and was buried in Cedardale Cemetery.
