!851 Census describes WP as a master shoemaker employing three men. In hosehold (Black Bull) at 1851 census in addition to wife and children are Jane White, 16 years, houseservant; Robert Potts, uncle, unmarried, 73 years, shoemaker; Margaret Potts, Aunt, Unmarried, 67 years, shoemaker; John Murrey, servant, Unmarried, 30 years, Last Maker, born Ayre Scotand. The last three of these could be the "three men" (sic). The Black Bull Inn at Haydon Bridge was on the north side of the river, probably on the southside of radcliffe road (the main road going through the town) and now (2000) is a private house. Tenants were:- 1828 Joseph Oliver; 1855 Margaret Robson; 1881 Thomas Thirwell. In 1851 there were no other residents apart from the Potts family who all appeared to be shoemakers. in 1855 there was also a john Potts buider resident.
