Greenings Frenchay and Winterbourne.
-----------------------------------------------

Our family tree first encountered the name Greening when we get back to the marriage between Adam Emmett and Mary Greening. These were my Gtx3 grandparents the parents of Elizabeth Emmett.
Mary was born as close as we can tell July 1813, she was baptised on the 4th july as the illegitimate daughter of Hester Greening. She was born in frenchay nr Bristol and for a long time I could find nothing concrete about her. Eventually I found that the Winterbourne and Frenchay parish records were available on line through the winterbourne museum site and trawling all through the records on this site turned up many greenings and it has taken some considerable effort to sort them out.
I think we have got the tree built correctly although there is no absolute certainty. With the help of the available census sheets I have managed to put all of the Greenings into a family group and it has thrown up one or two amazing little family quirks.
1 Mary illegitimate herself had an illegitimate child James 4 years before she married Adam Emmett.

2 Marys mother hester had a sister Hannah who also had an illegitimate child Emma.

3 Marys mother Hester lived most of her life with her sisters Ann and Hannah, between them they appear to have brought up Marys first born James, Hannah's emma and possibly a chird child Charles who appears on the 1841 census.
James was born 1834. Charles was born 1842 but I dont know to who.
After Mary had married Adam they also took into their household a louisa Greening who was the granddaughter of Hesters brother John.

They all appear to be a very close knit family, what with children being brought up by aunts and a large no of them all living within a few doors of each other, see census pages for 1841/51/61/71/81.

1841 census. Adam and Mary have 2 of their own children plus Emma and Louisa living in the same house.
Next door is the 3 spinsters Ann, hester and Hannah bringing up James(marys son) and Charles.

1851 census Adam and Mary now have 4 children of their own plus louisa living with them
Next door is Hester Ann Hannah and James. Charles has either left or died. (no death index apparent)

1861 census We now have 5 adjacent house occupied by Greenings or related - Hawksworth.
1 Jane Greening widow 60. (widow of William b1791?)
2 Adam Mary and daughter Sarah.
3 Hannah, her daughter emma and son in law Henry Vaughan, plus Anna Maria Hawksworth who I believe to be the child of Ellen Hawksworth and possibly niece of Hannah?
4 Mary Greening widow 61 ( widow of Samuel G b 1791) plus her son Henry.
5 William hawkesworth, + wife ellen, + 2 children. Ellen was a greening before her marriage, she had an illegitimate daughter Selina 11.11.1832, selina subsequently married a william wall and she quoted her father as william Hawkesworth. Where ellen greening fits into the family I have yet to establish she was born abt 1811 but to whom????

1871 census It now gets very confusing:
1 Adam Emmett Widower (he is Not) where has Mary gone?
2 Hannah Greening with William walls Son in Law but no Selina! Emma Walls - she used to be Emma Vaughan but no mr Vaughan here plus gd daughter anna ? Hawkesworth.
3 Mary Greening widow of Samuel plus son henry.
1881 census Mary Emmett is in the Stapleton workhouse. Still alive! she died Nov 1887.

I have put together this tree as I believe it to be but willingly accept it may not be totally accurate and I welcome any additional information which may confirm my ideas or put me straight.
