Vern was 26 years old when his wife died and he was left to rear four daughters. Soon after his wife died he moved to Sand Springs, Oklahoma, then to Shamrock, Oklahoma and finally to Pryor, Oklahoma to live with his parents and brother, George. His mother cared for his four daughters. Vern, after his wife died, was extremely stern with his four daughters...occasionally too stern. When he owned the ice plant he often had his daughters "pull ice" for him when they were teenagers. In about 1931 he bought an 80 acre farm in Pryor, Oklahoma where he lived until his death in 1942. He died at the age of 54 after suffering many many years with cancer of the throat. His granddaughter, Virginia Ferris Alfano remembers "my fondest childhood memories take me back to that farm where we used to spend our summer vacations each year". He loved sports, hunting and music; could play the violin and had a good voice. [Tone:228]
