Miriam married William Funke. They traveled to Wyoming on Bill's motorcycle in the early 30's . She was an original "biker chick". According to her brother, Gerald Cooley, Miriam was an excellent basketball player and played on the Hollenberg High School girls team. She could also kick a football farther than most boys her age. I will always remember her laugh. She loved a good joke and was notorious for pulling pranks on her siblings. Mariam was named for her two grandmothers, Mariam Witham Wagoner and Elizabeth Harter Cooley.

William grew up on a farm near Hollenberg, Washington, Kansas. He worked for a time in Wyoming. He started working for the Certain-Teed gysum mine just outside of Blue Rapids, Marshall , Kansas. Bestwall Gysum bought out Certain-Teed and he continued to work for them. Bestwall sold out to the Georgia-Pacific Corporation and they build a new plant between Marysville and Blue Rapids, Kansas. Bill continued to work for this company until he retired.

Manhattan--Services wil be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Stewart Funeral Chapel in Westmoreland for Maxine Davin, 73, Manhattan, who died Saturday June 13, 1992 at Manhattan Hospital where she had been a patient several days and undergone surgery. Mrs. Davin was a switchboard operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company and later worked for Allied Manufacturing Company in Manhattan before she retired. She was born July 12, 1918 in Edson, the daughter of Guy M. and Faye P. Wagoner Cooley. She was married to Melvin E. Davin August 6, 1966 in St. George. He survives. Other survivors include a son, Kenneth Paul Stanberry, Tooele, Utah; a stepdaughter, Beverly Sharp, Monument, Colorado; two stepsons, DeWayne Davin, Manhattan, and Michael Davin, Olathe; two brothers, Alan J. Cooley, Manhattan, and Gerald M. Cooley Washington; and four grandchildren. Burial will be in Westmoreland City Cemetery. Mrs. Davin will lie in state after 10 a.m. today at the funeral chapel where relatives and friends will meet from 7 until 8 p.m. today. Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Crippled Children Maxine graduated from Hollenberg High School, Washington County, Kansas. She disliked her first name and was known to her friends and family as Maxine or "Mickey". She married Clarence Stanberry . They owned a resturant in Blue Rapids, Marshall, Kansas. She married Melvin Davin later in life and they are both buried in the Davin family plot in Westmoreland, Kansas.

Melvin Edward Davin, age 66, of 920 North 4th Street, died August 16, 1993 at his residence . He was born January 1, 1927, in Wheaton, Kansas, the son of George Jr and May Thompson Davin, and had been an area resident for more than 40 years.

Mr. Davin graduated from Westmoreland High School in 1945. He served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Reserve for more than 35 years. He had worked civil service at Fort Riley for more than 35 years as a housing supervisor.

His memberships include the American Legion Post #17 and the V.F.W. Post 1786.

Mr. Davin was first married to Dora M. Haefner; he later married Maxine Cooley and she preceded him in death June 1992.

Survivors include two sons: Ernest D. Davin of Manhattan, Michael E. Davin of Overland Park ; one step son: Kenneth P. Stanberry of Tooele, Utah; one daughter: Beverly A. Sharpe of Monument, Colorado and four grandchildren.

Note: Melvin Davin never served in active combat during a foreign war; was not eligible for membership in the VFW. He was active in the American Legion Post and frequently helped out at the VFW Post because of the interrelationship between the two organizations. Whoever supplied the information did not know the extent of Melvin's military service.
