[NEGHR:1880:34:203] "Notes and Queries"
WINDHAM, CANADA.--In Dr. Bond's Watertown, page 396, it is stated that Stephen Pierce and Abigail Bemis were "dismissed to' Windham Canada,' Feb. 5, 1732." Page 871, they were "dismissed from Waltham church to Windham Village alias Canada."
Can any one tell me where this place was? What town is it now? It is not Windham, Conn., as the names are not found in the records, either church or town, there.

Frederick C. Pierce.
Barre, Mass., Feb. 7, 1880

NEGHR:1881:35:90] "Notes and Queries"
WINDHAM, CANADA.--In the Register for April, 1880 (vol. xxxiv. p. 203), F. C. Pierce inquires where Windham village, alias "Canada," was located. The manual of the old Congregational Church in Windham, Ct. (formed Dec. 10, 1700), and printed in Norwich in 1860, now before me, says: "In 1723, a Colony of over sixty members was dismissed to form a church at 'Canada,' now Hampton." Does not this fact settle this question? But further: in this manual a list of more than 1280 names are printed, and among them occur those of Elizabeth and Ruth Bemis (Nos. 224 and 374), who went from the Windham to form this Hampton church. This may account for the dismissal of "Stephen Pierce and wife Abigail Bemis to Windham Canada"--as some of her kindred already may have lived there in 1732.

S. Wright.
Glen's Falls, N. Y., Dec. 10, 1880.
[Barber (Conn. Hist. Coll. 424) calls it "Kennedy."--Ed.]

Notes for Ephraim Bemis:
"The Bemis History and Genealogy" by Colonel Thomas Waln-Morgan Draper,1900, published San Francisco, California, copies in the Library of Congress

"There is not much to be said of Ephraim Bemis, because little is known. He resided in Ashford, and the church records of that town state; "at one time (1728) in Ashford Church, discipline was so strict, yet with all this, when it was put to a vote of the Association, whether Ephraim Bemis was guilty of a confessable fault in selling strong liquor, in small quantities, on a certain occasion, the church decided in the negative.

The rigid church party in Ashford were very bitter against the Baptists and Separatists, and the preaching of Solomon Paine was especially obnoxious, so that on Feb. 15, 1745, Justice Tiffany gave a warrant to Constable Ephraim Bemis to arrest Paine, who resisted; whereupon he was forcibly placed on a horse and conducted to the Justices where he was properly rebuked, and apparently dismissed. Constable Bemis and his assistants had been very forbearing and gentle with the Exhorter Paine, but in spite of that, they were themselves indicted for riot, but on trail, declared not guilty, yet had the costs to pay, which later were also remitted.

Ephraim Bemis was baptized, as an adult, at the same time as his son James, namely Sept. 29, 1737."
