Descendants of Joseph Bemis

Generation No. 4

      46. Phillip4 Bemis (Joseph3, Joseph2, Joseph1)330,331 was born 21 Nov 1700 in Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts, and died Aft. 1782. He married Elizabeth Lawrence332,333 21 Nov 1723 in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts334,335. She was born 13 Nov 1701 in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts, and died Aft. 1782.

Notes for Phillip Bemis:
[Historical Sketch of the Town of Troy, New Hampshire, and Her Inhabitants...1764-1897, by M. T. Stone, M. D., Press of Sentinel Printing Company, Keene, N. H.]

Philip Bemis, perhaps grandson of Joseph, who settled in Watertown, Mass., in 1640, was in Cambridge in 1723, and married, Nov. 21, 1723, Elizabeth Lawrence. In 1738 he moved to Westminster, Mass., being the third settler in that township. He had six children, all born in Cambridge. The date of their birth is not recorded but the church records give the date of baptism as follows:

I. Philip, Nov. 13, 1726.
II. William, Nov. 13, 1726.
III. David, July 30, 1727.
IV. Abigail, July 25, 1731.
V. Edmund, Oct. 22, 1732.
VI. Zacheus, July 25, 1736; married Elizabeth Lyon, and settled in Westminster.

The History of Ashburnham, Massachusetts indicates that Philip Bemis was probably the son of Joseph. Other records, including the logic of birth dates (the elder Joseph was born about 1619, and his son, Joseph Jr., was born in 1651, and Philip was born about 1700) would indicate that Philip was more likely the son of Joseph Bemis, Jr.

Philip lived in Cambridge from 1723 to 1738. He was married in 1738 and moved to Westminster, where he and his wife were the third settlers. He was considered to be a man of influence and character.

"The Bemis History and Genealogy" by Colonel Thomas Waln-Morgan Draper,1900, published San Francisco, California, copies in the Library of Congress, p6:

"...m. Nov 21, 1723. Elizabeth Lawrence. They settled down in Westminster in 1738, and he was the third permanent settler in that town. They had probably previously lived in Cambridge. Phillip was a plain, substantial and much respected citizen, though he held no office. The exact dates of death of his wife and self, are not known, though he was living in 1782. He had in his family a waif or orphan boy named Daniel Munjoy."

The Vital Records for Cambridge [Vol. 2, p. 236] show the following marriage under Lawrence:
"Eliza[beth] and Phillip Beemus, Nov. 21, 1723" (intention not recorded)
