Hi Steve,
I saw your research material on the Bemis line on USGenweb and Ancestry. It
is excellent work. I descend from Jonathan Lackey, born 1775, Spencer,
Worcester, MA, to Abraham and Mary Lackey. ( Vital Records of Spencer
to 1850 ) Abraham and Mary Lackey were both from Watertown,
originally.( Bond's Watertown ) On 10 December 1797,Jonathan Lackey married
Mercy Simmons in Spencer/ Brookfield,MA. ( NEHGS) On that very same day,
Jeremiah Simmons married MOLLY BEMIS, in Spencer.(NEHGS) Due to later
connections,I believe that Mercy Simmons and Jeremiah Simmons were siblings,
however, I have not been able to pinpoint their parents. By 1800, Abraham
and Mary Lackey, Jeremiah Simmons and Molly Bemis, and Jonathan Lackey and
Mercy Simmons resided in Hancock, Addison County, VT. I rented the LDS
microfilm to verify this and sure enough, Abraham Lackey, Jonathan Lackey,
and Jeremiah Simmons were named as "freemen" and admitted to a Hancock town
meeting, Sept. 1, 1801. There are also several land transactions between
these three men in Addison County documented in those early years. In the
1810 census, Jeremiah Simmons and Molly Bemis were in Middlebury, Addison,
VT, with five children; Abraham Lackey was still in Hancock; and Jonathan
Lackey was in Essex, NY. I have ordered the microfilm for Middlebury to
investigate the Jeremiah Simmons family a bit further, but in lieu of that,
I have a couple of questions: Have you had any luck in determining the
parents of Jeremiah Simmons, husband of Molly Bemis? ( since they are likely
the parents of Mercy Simmons, also, they would be my direct ancestors! ) Do
you know the names of any of the children of Jeremiah Simmons and Molly
Bemis? I would be happy to share what I learn about them when my microfilm
comes in.
Sincerely, Billie Pett, Longmont, CO

No, I can say that I have anything about Jeremiah Simmons or his children or parents. The reference for him is the Vital Records of Spencer, p. 136, "BEMISS - Molly and Jeremiah Simmons of Brookfield, Dec. 10, 1797" Because of the way this is shown, he is probably from Brookfield, not Spencer. The wedding of Jeremiah and also of Mercy and Jonathan Lackey are both recorded in the VR for Brookfield as well. Also, be sure to check Simonds and Simons as the Brookfield VR refers to this spelling as well.
