From Frederick J. Seaver, Historical Sketches of Franklin County N. Y. & Its Several Towns, with Many Short Biographies, (1918):

[Franklin (County, New York) Telegraph, about March 9, 1826]

The annual meeting of the different towns in this county (Franklin), occurred on the Tuesday last, for the choice of officers and the transaction of other business. At the meeting, Timothy Bemis, along with several others, was appointed "Fence Viewer". The job of fence viewer, or hayward, was to see that all fences were in good repair. If they were not, it was his job to notify the property owners on each side that repairs must be made and if necessary, to adjudicate a fair and equitable settlement of repair costs. The fence viewer, with the assistance of the city surveyor, could also settle questions of legal property boundaries for fence placement.

Notes for Lois Rhodes:
The spelling of Lois' last name appears in many forms. In the History of Marlborough, by Charles Bemis, she is referred to as "Lois, b. May 1, 1775; m. Timothy Bemis, q. v." daughter of Ebenezer and Sarah (Page) Rhodes. This spelling can also be found on page 80 of the "Bemis History" by Thomas Draper.

The Town Clerks book in Marlborough, New Hampshire lists her marriage to Timothy Bemis in the following manner: "This certify that Mr. Timothy Bemis and Miss Louis Rhoades both of Marlborough formally appeared before me on June 3 - 1795 and were lawfully married - Holloway Fish ..."

There are several gravestones in Marlborough representing brothers and sisters of Lois. For example, one reads: "In Memory of A Son of Mr. Ebenezer Rhoads and Mrs. Sarah his wife still born in August 1778".

Finally, the vital records of Walpole record the marriage of her parents in this way, "ROADS - Ebenezer [int. Roades of Stoughtonham] and Sarah Page, Mar. 12, 1767"

From this, a case can be made of any of the following spellings: Rhodes/Rhoades/Rhoads/Roads/Roades

I have chosen to use Rhodes as presented by Charles Bemis, a relative and historian of Marlborough.
