David--
Luther Bemis is the son of Daniel Bemis and Patty Winch. Luther's name seems to make its first appearance in the Weston, Mass. tax lists in 1816 when he is listed as "poll only", which is interpreted as he had just turned 21 years, and he did not own any property. That would put his birth at approx. 1795. This seems to correspond with the age and the date of his death recorded in the Wayland VR, p129. of 18 Dec. 1843 aged 49.

There is a deed, at the Middlesex County Registery of Deeds, Book 273, page 43 dated 28 March 1820 but not recorded until 1827 of Luther Bemis, grantor to Daniel Bemis, Grantee. Luther Bemis of Weston, Yeoman, conveys to Daniel Bemis of Weston, Yeoman, several parcels of land in Weston, and East Sudbury (now called Wayland). These particular parcels have a long history of being mortgaged quite a few times by Daniel Bemis to various townspeople from as early as 1809 and onwards, and by 1817 they had been conveyed to Luther Bemis. Luther has now returned the land to Daniel. The deed is witnessed by Rachel Moulton (his future wife) and Leonard Bemis (probably one of his brothers). Within a week of the signing of the deed, the intention of marriage is published (Weston VR,page 204), beween Mr. Luther Bemis and Miss Rachel Moulton, both of Weston, 2 April 1820.

Daniel Bemis b. 5 Mar 1757/58 at Weston was the son of John and Hannah (Warren) Bemis. He m. at Weston 18 Nov. 1784 Patty Winch, dau. of Capt. Joseph and Mary (Beals)Winch of Wayland and Framingham. She had a brother named Luther. Rachel Moulton may be the dau. of Daniel and Rachel (--) Moulton of Wayland and Framingham.

I have just recently found this information on Luther and am still researching this part of the Bemis family so the story is not complete but I do have much more information than shown here. I would hope that you can share some information on your family with me. Please contact me at:
