Notes for William Howe:
[Howe:303] He was a skilled mechanic, and a man of great ingenuity; he was the inventor and patentee of the "truss woden bridge" used in construction of large bridges. He constructed the bridge for the Western Railroad over the Conn. River at Springfield, Mass. He also designed and built the roof over the large depot of the Boston and Worcester R.R. at Boston, which was considered at that time a very difficult and hazardous undertaking, and it was successfully accomplished. He lived in Spencer several years, then moved to Springfield, Mass., where he died 19 Sept. 1852.
