Vol. Inf. Mortimer was born circa 1837 at Ohio. He was a son of Abner and Emily Bemis. The father was born circa 1809 at Vermont and the mother was born circa 1814 at New York. They were all listed in the 1850 census as residing on a farm in th town of Vinland. With them were the following children: Lavina, born circa 1835; Mortimer; Charles W., born circa 1839; Fanny E., born circa 1841; Orville A., born circa 1845; Charlotte A., born circa 1847; and Levi F., born in 1850. All of the children were listed as born in Ohio. Mortimer resided at Menasha and enlisted there on May 9, 1864 and was assigned as above. He was mustered out on Sept. 23, 1864 at the end of his term of enlistment. ----------------------------------------------------- [Received from Sherry Martin] Per handwriten record of Myrta I. Was taken sick while in the amry and died shrotly after returning home." DEATH: Died "of disease" while enlisted in Company G, 1st Cavalry Regiment Wisconsin. Military: Enlisted as Corporal on 8 September 1861 in Company G, 1st Cavalry Regiment Wiscons in. Died of disease, Company G, 1st Cavalry Regiment, Wisconsin on 10 January 1863 in Greenville , Wisconsin. BURIAL: Greenville Pioneer Cemetery outside Greenville WI. Cemetery located south of Greenville near junction of School and Manley roads. Charles has a beautiful flat to the ground gravestone with a carved motif depicting a cannon draped with two flags and a pyramid tower of cannon balls. The inscription reads: Charles W. Son of Abner and Emily Bemis Died Jan 18, 1863 E. 23 years and.......stone broken here. Photo available from Sherry Martin. As an aside--this was quite a year for the Bemis family. In January they lost their son, Charles W., a Civil War soldier; in March they lost two young daughters, Emily and Mary, and April they lost a young grandson, George R. Carter. All four are buried in the "Greenville Pioneer Cemetery" [so called today]. |
