Benjamin Bemis, who was born in Brattleboro, Vt., came to Ellisburgh with his wife and a large family of children about 1806. Of his children, Benjamin, Jr., born in 1798, learned the clothiers' trade and established a business on Bear Creek, about one mile east of Ellisburgh village. He afterwards, about 1838, built mills just above the site of the stone mills. In 1843 he built the Universalist Church at the village. He was a prominent man in the town, and served as town clerk and collector several years. In 1820 he married Marilla Spink, by whom he had two children, Freelove L. and Marshall J. Freelove L., born in 1824, married, first, Chester Stearns, by whom she had a son, Henry, and second, Daniel T. Hopkinson. She died in 1861. Marshall J. was born in Ellisburgh in 1830, and was reared upon a farm. He married, first, Cornelia E., daughter of Jacob and Catherine (Swartfigeur) Christman, in 1849, who died in 1857, and second, Eliza Ann, daughter of Horace and Louisa (Tracy) McKee, in 1861. By his first wife he had a daughter, Cornelia E., born in 1857, who married T. H. Willard, by whom she had a son, Fred H., and a daughter, Alma C. By his second wife Mr. Bemis has had a daughter and two sons, viz.: Bertie Isabell, born in 1865, who married Charles H. Nobles and now resides in Little Falls, N. Y.; Winfred M., born November 21, 1867; and Pardon M., born October 16, 1869. In 1849 Mr. Bemis purchased the old Houck farm, on road 110, which he now occupies.

Mortimer was born circa 1837 at Ohio. He was a son of Abner and Emily Bemis. The father was born circa 1809 at Vermont and the mother was born circa 1814 at New York. They were all listed in the 1850 census as residing on a farm in th town of Vinland. With them were the following children: Lavina, born circa 1835; Mortimer; Charles W., born circa 1839; Fanny E., born circa 1841; Orville A., born circa 1845; Charlotte A., born circa 1847; and Levi F., born in 1850. All of the children were listed as born in Ohio. Mortimer resided at Menasha and enlisted there on May 9, 1864 and was assigned as above. He was mustered out on Sept. 23, 1864 at the end of his term of enlistment.

DEATH: Died "of disease" while enlisted in Company G, 1st Cavalry Regiment Wisconsin.

Military: Enlisted as Corporal on 8 September 1861 in Company G, 1st Cavalry Regiment Wiscons in.
Died of disease, Company G, 1st Cavalry Regiment, Wisconsin on 10 January 1863 in Greenville , Wisconsin.

BURIAL: Greenville Pioneer Cemetery outside Greenville WI. Cemetery located south of Greenville near junction of School and Manley roads. Charles has a beautiful flat to the ground gravestone with a carved motif depicting a cannon draped with two flags and a pyramid tower of cannon balls. The inscription reads:

As an aside--this was quite a year for the Bemis family. In January they lost their son, Charles W., a Civil War soldier; in March they lost two young daughters, Emily and Mary, and April they lost a young grandson, George R. Carter. All four are buried in the "Greenville Pioneer Cemetery" [so called today].
