Notes for Colonel George Hamlin Bemus:
"The Bemis History and Genealogy" by Colonel Thomas Waln-Morgan Draper,1900, published San Francisco, California, copies in the Library of Congress,p53.

He was educated at the Fredonia Academy; subsequently studied law with the Hon. Madison Burnell at Jamestown, N.Y. and admitted to practice in Nov. 1853. He practiced in Jamestown, N.Y., Meadville, Penn. and in Wenona, Wis. In the latter town, he was elected Judge of Probate and was also a Director in the Transit R.R. Co. In April 1861, he enlisted in a company formed at Meadville, Penn. and was elected 2d Lieut. His company was attached to the 9th Penn. Reserves and served in the army of the Potomac. He served as Aide-de-camp to Genrls. Seymour and C.F. Jackson, and was in the seven days fighting before Richmond; and in the Battles of South Mountain, Antietam and Fredericksburg, in the latter he was seriously wounded, having to leave the Army. Later on he raised a company which was attached to the 58th Penn Militia, of which he was made Colonel. His Regiment took part in the capture of Genrl. John H. Morgan, and he was the officer who had charge of the prisoner. He resigned from the Army in 1863, and in 1864-65 was elected to the Penn. Legislature. He afterwards practiced law in New York City, Petrotia, Penn. and Allegheny Co. N.Y. Owing to disabilities incurred in the army he has of late not been engaged in active business.

Notes for Samuel Case Barney:
[John_Terry.FTW]

His mother, Abigail Winship, died within 5 days of his birth. He was cared for by Deacon Ephrain Case and his wife; they were neighbors. In 1826 he moved with this family to Chautauqua County. In January of 1827 he married Eliza Bemas. The next year they settled on a farm at the east side of Chautauqua Lake one mile above the narrows. In his business he was prompt and decisive and at his death all who knew him were ready to accord him the tribute of an honest man and a Christian. His children have a pleasant recollection of a family altar where mother as well as father join in the service. (Per the Barney Family History this was taken from a handwritten brief by Betsey Barney Losse, copied by Lewis Bouton 12-5-43)

The following recollections are from Alice Terry - At the time of his death Samuel Case Barney was living at his old home. Luther Barney, his son, was living at home and apparently taking care of the farm. Early in February Luther made a trip somewhere and did not get home in time to do the chores, so his father went out to the barn to feed and milk the cows. The weather was stormy and Samuel caught a cold which developed into pneumonia and resulted in his death.

Drowned While skating on Chautauqua Lake."

Recollection of C. A. Hildum (husband of Loretta Barney, daughter of Zee Barney) in a statement made to Lewis Bouton as noted in Barney Family History - "He (Thomas Barney) came back from the war, found the beds to soft; they had been such hard ones in the Confederate prisons.
