Notes for Simeon Daniels Fay:
[Fay Genealogy - John Fay of Marlborough and His Descendants, Orlin P. Fay, Cleveland, Ohio, 1898]
p. 296-7: Simeon Daniels (440).
His mother's name was Lydia Bemis, daughter of Phineas Bemis and granddaughter of Elisha Bemis; his grandmother was Sarah Childs before marriage, and his great grandmother's maiden name was Reid. His mother's great uncle was killed in the battle of Lexington: his name was Asahel Reid.
Mr. Fay was a soldier in the Mexican War: he was also in the late war and was engaged in the battle of Shiloh, April 6 and 7, 1862. (50 years old.) He belonged to the 18th Regt. Wisconsin Vols. The regiment suffered great loss and was demoralized, and as he says, "I fought on my own hook." Then he joined the 36th Illinois Regt. They were driven back and he joined the 32nd Illinois. Co. B, and then led them by a flank movement but was outflanked by the enemy after suffering severe loss and was compelled to retreat. Next he joined the 15th Michigan, and soon after went into the 57th Illinois, and after sanguinary fighting they were victorious at four or five o'clock and drove the rebels from the field. He was introduced to Gen. Harvey the 18th of April, who promised him a commission, but he was drowned April 19th sometime during the night. The papers regarding the service of Mr. Fay at the battle of Shiloh were found in the pocket of the General and were also published in the "Madison Journal," the "Milwaukee Sentinel," the "Wood Co. Reporter," and in the "Oxford Express." In the regiment he belonged to the Lieutenant Colonel, the Colonel, the Major and his Captain (Compton), were killed. Col. Bouck of the 2nd Wisconsin Regt. took the command. His company then wanted him to take the position of Lieutenant. Col. Bouck refused to approbate him on account of his age. At the great battle of Corinth, Oct. 3 and 4, 1862, Major Jackson requested Col. Bouck to give Mr. Fay a commission, but he again refused on account of his age. Afterwards he went into the 8th Wisconsin or "Eagle" regiment, and participated in the different battles of that regiment, too numerous to mention. He has been an invalid since the war on account of a sunstroke July 21, 1865, at Selma, Ala.
Mr. Fay is responsible for the following statement: Josiah Fay, son of Robert (?) served at the commencement of the Revolution as Captain and soon rose to the rank of Major. He was poisoned by a treacherous doctor while in the war. The doctor was soon after put to death and made his confession that he had killed thirty men in the same way. He sorrowed and regretted that he had poisoned Major Fay because he said he considered him a very nice man. (See letter of Mr. Fay, May 17, 1885).
The following is from the "Kilbourn (Wis.), Mirror": "Simeon D. Fay of Oxford, Wis., who is visiting this town, affords one about as pleasant an interview as can be found in a man. He has fought through the Mexican War, and those who knew him at the time of Shiloh and other battles say 'he was always found were the bullets were thickest.' He is a 'walking encyclopedia' of dates and war reminiscences as far back as history goes. Though seventy-five years of age he is yet equal to a long day's march."
