Obituary:

Death of Mrs. Chas. W. Bemis

Elizabeth Schorb was born in Burlington, Wis., on Sept. 13, 1852, and died at the home of her son, Dr. H. E. Bemis, in Ames, Iowa, Oct. 8, 1921. She was married in 1875 to Charles W. Bemis and moved to Kansas with her husband in 1878. They took a claim in Delhi township, Osborne county, where they lived the life of pioneer sheep ranchmen for a number of years. She was always interested in people, and active in educational and religious work in her community and many a traveler found a cordial welcome at the Bemis home. In order to give the children the advantage of better schools the family moved to Cawker City in 1891, and bought the farm at the northwest corner of town which has been the family home ever since.

Probably the outstanding ambition of father and mother was that they might be able to raise their children under the influence of a Christian home, and to provide for them the advantages of an education.

Mrs. Bemis had a remarkable ability for seeing and appreciating the beauties of life. She had a deep appreciation of nature, music, art, poetry and the value of friendships. Since early womanhood she had been an active member and worker in the church, and an ardent supporter of the schools and other community activities.

She has been preceded in death by her husband and daughter Emily, (Mrs. M. A. Smith). Two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Allen and Miss Millie Thurston of Los Angeles; three sons, George, Charles and Edward; and seven grandchildren are the members of the immediate family who remain to mourn the loss and cherish the memory of the beautiful life which has just closed.

About the first of September Mrs. Bemis went to Ames, Ia., to keep house for her son, Dr. H. E. Bemis, whose wife died a short time ago, taking with her two grandchildren who are motherless. Maxine and Morris Smith. There in the college town she expected to spend the school term, surrounded by the good, the beautiful and elevating influences in which she so much delighted, and was supremely happy in her new home. The first of last week she became ill, but it was thought her ailment would not prove serious, though she had long been bothered with leakage of the heart. The physicians recommended only that she rest as much as possible, and this she did, but on Saturday evening, early, while alone in her room, she quietly passed away, and died as she had lived, quietly and peacefully.

Monday morning her body was brought to Cawker City, accompanied by her son and grandchildren, and on Tuesday afternoon she was laid to rest in Prairie Grove cemetery, the funeral services being held at the old home she loved so well, the Reb. Stanford Binkley of the Presbyterian church having charge of the absequies, the music being furnished by a quartet composed of Miss Louise Remus, Mrs. George Meall, Mr. W. E. Blankenship and Mr. Chas. Wodbury. The pallbearers were old friends of the family, and the service was attended by an extremely large number of friends, many of them coming long distances to pay tribute to her memory.
