He was a soldier in the war of 1812, and died at his daughter's house, March 15, 1881, aged ninety-six. Mr. and Mrs. Bemis settled on the homestead, taken up by the former's father, which has never been out of the family, where they expect to pass the remainder of their days. They have 200 acres under good cultivation. Sumner Bemis

Died of Heart Failure at His Venango Home Yesterday.

Sumner Beemis, on of the pioneers of Erie County, died of heart failure at his home in Venango township yesterday. Universal sorrow will be felt over the passing away of another of Erie County's stalwart Republicans and representative men.

Deceased was born March 20, 1823 in Chenango County, New York. He came to Erie county in his young manhood and in 1848 was married to Miss Eleanor Hinton, daughter of a soldier of the War of 1812, who for some time was keeper of the lighthouse of this port. Mr. Bemis was reared on a farm and
secured his education at the country schools. He was honest and industrious and by judicious work, became the owner of 200 acres of valuable farm land under cultivation. The living children of the deceased are Sumner Jr., Elmer E. and Henry S of Erie and Gerry with whom the father resided. Mr.
Bemis never aspired to public office, but served Venango township in various capacities. He was school director for 12 years. His wife died 17 years ago.

Mr. Bemis was a model man, he had few enemies and countless friends. He was a constant attendant and supporter the Presbyterian Church. The funeral will be held Tues. afternoon at 2 o'clock.

Death of an Estimable Lady - Social Happenings - Notable Events - Alliance News.

June 8 - We are extremely sorry to chronicle the death of Miss Ella Bemis, who died at the residence of her father on Tuesday, June 2d, in the thirty-second year of her age. Consumption brought death, not unexpected.

ELLA BEMIS

Miss Ella Bemis was born April 9, 1859, upon the same homestead where she breathed her last on Tuesday. At an early age she developed a taste for music and literature and by the cultivation of her gifts soon became a bright and shining light in society. She has for many years been a member of the Select Choir of the South Wales Presbyterian Church, part of the time acting as organist and leading soprano. In the winter of 1890 during a series of revival meetings she made an open profession of faith. For several years she has been teacher of a class in the Sunday school and her scholars were very much devoted to her.

Her funeral sermon was preached by her pastor, the Rev. Sammons of Wattsburg. On Thursday she was laid to rest in the beautiful South Wales cemetery, the following persons, whom she chose, acting as pall bearers: Robert Tuttle, Eddie Cooper, George Robison, Bert Wildman, Joshua Bannister, Harry Carr.

[Also from the scrapbook]: "Mr. Oscar Wadsworth of Bradford was here attending the funeral of his niece, Miss Ella Bemis."
