Notes for George W. Losee:
[John_Terry.FTW]

Was born at Chestnut Ridge, Dutches County, in eastern New York. In 1834 he moved with his parents to Chautauqua County, NY were they made their home. His mothers family was from Holland; her family name was Harris. He was drafted into the Army during the Civil War. However, since he was married with a family his brother John served in his place. He made at least two extended trips to the midwest in search of land. In 1880 he moved with his family to Kansas, locating in Seneca where they lived for 20 years. He purchased 160 acres south-east of Seneca in Nemaha County. After the death of his son he moved to Valley Cente, Sedgwick county and 2 years later he moved to Wichita.

He continued to work as a carpenter and built many early buildings in Seneca and Wichita. These include the Seneca Public School building which was designed by his son-in-law Charles W. Terry. Per G. W. Losee's obituary - "he was a careful reader, never leaving a subject until he thoroughly understood it." He taught school for several terms. He spent several years at farming, however, favorite occupation was carpenter." George and his family were baptists. George and Betsey are buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Wichita, Kansas.

The following was taken from a handwritten brief by George Losse given to his grandson Lewis Bouton - "My mother’s ancestors came from Rhode Island. Her father’s name was Esek Wooley and her mother’s name was Martha Soule. I remember them well. Grandfather was a farmer and owned one of the nicest little farms in Dutchess County, and for his time was a very successful fruit raiser. He was also a tailor by trade in his younger years. They had seven children, all daughters, all of whom were married and with one exception lived to old age."
