Dora's first husband died ice skating on the lake. She gave two of her children to her husband's brother, Andrew Butts, and his wife, Ardella, to raise as their own. She raised the other four children and eventually remarried.

Died at home of daughter, Iva Bigelow. She spent her entire life in Harmony and North Harmony until moving to the home of her daughter in West Ellicott in 1942. Member of the First Baptist Church of Jamestown and the Wild Rose Cemetery Auxiliary of North Harmony.

Notes kept by Dora and rescribed by Inez Butts Simpson...Morris Butts skated to Jamestown January 18, 1894 and on his way home was drowned and no trace could be found of him till March 20, 1894. His body was found and was buried the same day.

This ends a useful and loved one's life, one whose loss is beyond estimating. March 30, 1894, Roy D. Z. Butts went to live to Jamestown with his Uncle Geo. R. Butts and Horace S. Butts to live with his Uncle Andrew at Jamestown, and the same day I moved into a part of my father's house with Iva, Glenn and little Inez. May 12, 1894 I took little Inez to live with her Uncle Andrew at Jamestown. June 13, 1894 I gave Andrew and Della papers of adoption for Horace and Inez. Sept. 4, 1895 Roy came home to live with me. May 27, 1896 Roy went to live with E. J. Cole at Jamestown, and July 29, 1897 he came back to live with me.

Exerpt: Morris Butts was a carpenter and a good mechanic and a great lover of machinery. Son of Merrill and Elsie Ann Rice-Butts born in Town of Harmony, September 7, 1853 (different from other sources). He attended district school and Jamestown High School one year. He was a carpenter by trade. In January 1894, on Chaut. Lake, when the ice had begun to thaw along the shore and on returning broke through and was drowned on January 18 off Cheney's Point. His body was recovered two months later on March 17th. He is buried in North Harmony Cemetery situate on South East corner of Lot 22 said town. He had six children, Iva, wife of Gillette Bigelow, Glenn, Roy, Horace and Inez, wife of Chas. Simpson, and Morris from after father's decease.
