Following his father's death in 1856, he sailed around the Horn with his Mother and brother and sister to California. He was brought up in Petaluma, Sonoma County but he later moved to San Francisco where he was in the drayage business.

William Shafter was over six feet tall, had a fine bass voice and sang for pay in San Francisco churches, with a singing group, and for a short time at the New York Metropolitan Opera. They lived on a 20 acre ranch in Blucher Valley, Merced County, California, and later in San Francisco.

Note: A "Chester" Edminster was listed with the family in 1899, 1900, an iron worker but otherwise unidentified.

He married Anne (???), had two children both of whom died in infancy. He was a red-headed, high-spirited lad who had trouble with his family and with the law. While at reform school at Whittier, California, he received a head injury playing football that contributed to later blindness and death. Later he reformed and became a Catholic.

Erma Arlene Freeman: b. 3 Aug. 1895, Lehighton, PA., d. May 1975 in Whitehall, Lehigh Co., PA (SSDI). Married to Vincent (Vimm) Cook Edminster 16 Oct 1916 in Allentown, Lehigh Co., PA. They moved to 7132 Guyer St., Philadelphia, PA where Vimm was employed as a machinist for the shipyards (Federal census 1920) They had one child, a son, James Lovell Edminster, born 31 Mar 1919. James became a Major in the U.S. Army and died in Oct. 1943. He was married to Margaret Mertz on 31 Mar 1940.

Edna Mary Trexler: b. 10 Jun 1893 in Alburtus, Lower Macungie Township, Lehigh Co. Pa. Edna died 15 Jan 1982 in Topton, Berks Co., PA.(SSDI) Edna was the daughter of Charles T. Trexler and Kate Schlicher. Charles Trexler died and Kate married Harry J. Shoemaker and they lived at 620 Eleventh St. in Allentown, PA. Edna Trexler was still living with them in 1930 according to the Federal census of 1930. Edna and Vincent Cook Edminster were married (unknown).
