Notes for George Franklin Bemis: [Received from Curtis Bemis Jr.] from research-- March 2000; see http://members.xoom.com/bemis/john1659.htm ******************* George Franklin Bemis was named George Washington Bemis at birth, after his father. His name was later changed to George Franklin Bemis. ( see notes in "History of Dublin New Hampshire" , p. 718) ************ from "History of Dublin, New Hampshire" George Franklin Bemis, son of George W., #4, b. in Dublin, July 16, 1852; m. Feb. 2, 1871, Emma Josephine Smith, b. in Westmoreland, May 9, 1853; foster dau. of Ira Prentiss and Fanny (Buss) Smith. He res. near the Chesham station; has operated a general store, partly in conjunction with his sons, and is the proprietor of a livery stable. Six ch., all b. in Chesham. ************ Newspaper clipping from the Boston Globe, January 13, 1914-- "New Hampshire is noted for large families, but it is comparitively rare, even in that State, to see a baby who has three great-grandparents living. But at Chesham there lives a man who is even now only 61 who has the distinction of being a great-grandfather. His wife, who is 60, is hale and hearty. And as his sons's wife's mother is also living at the age of 84, the baby has three "Greats to his name." The Chesham man is George F. Bemis. He was the father of six sons, of whom five are living. A son Grover, who died in 1894 was named after Grover Cleveland, under whose first administration George F. Bemis was appointed postmaster, holding the appointment through the Harrison regime, and then thru the second Cleveland term. Somebody else took office for a while but it eventually came back to the Bemis family and son Casper Bemis has now held it for a long time. George F. Bemis was born in Chesham and became livery stablekeeper in a day when that business was the more important because there was no railroad. He was the son of a woodware manufacturer which was also a more important business before wire bails for pails came into fashion. His father thus acquired a comfortable fortune. When the railroad was built through Keene from Pittsfield, George F. Bemis was made the first stationmaster and also the agent for the American Express Company. That was 35 or 40 years ago, but he still holds both positions. Mrs. Lambert C. Howe, wife of Lambert Howe, also a wodenware manufacturer still lives in Chesham at the age of 84. Except for her slight difficulty in hearing, she retains all her faculties wonderfully" ************* Newspaper clipping about George Franklin Bemis and wife Emma on their 65th wedding anniversary unknown NH newspaper, date February 3, 1936, with photo of George and Emma (note--this was about 3 months prior to his death-Curtis E. BEMIS OF CHESHAM DIES IN HIS 84'TH YEAR. Aged Man Was Active in Affairs of Town; Long Employed by Railroad. George F. Bemis, 83, prominent resident and business man of Chesham, a hamlet in the town of Harrisville, died in this city Thursday, following a short illness, having returned only four weeks ago with Mrs. Bemis from Concord, where they had spent the winter with his granddaughter, Mrs. Roy Knox. The immediate cause of his illness was anticipated and his death was a simple slipping away with no suffering. The funeral will be held from his late home in Chesham, Sunday afternoon. Services will be private. The body may be seen in his late home between the hours of 4 and 8 Saturday. Mr. Bemis was the oldest male resident of Harrisville, having held the Boston Post cane for a number of years. He had served as the station agent in Chesham since the railroad was built in 1874 and possessed a gold pass which is presented those who have been in the employ of the Boston & Maine railroad 50 years or more. Mr. Bemis was with Gov. Samuel Hale at the time the governor drove the last spike in the construction of the Keene-Manchester railroad not far from the Chesham railroad station. Mr. Bemis also served as agent for the American Railway Express company for the Western Union Telegraph company. During Pres. Cleveland's administration Mr. Bemis was appointed postmaster and continued through Pres. Harrison's administration and Pres. Cleveland's second term. He was a member of the Baptist church and had been active in the affairs of the town. He is a staunch Democrat. When Mr. Bemis began working for the railroad, he received $7 a month for several years. When he began his railroad career, the late C. S. Mellen was division superintendent of the railroad. Mr. Bemis is survived by his widow, who was Emma J. Bemis, whom he married Feb. 2, 1871. Mr. and Mrs. Bemis observed their 65'th wedding anniversary in February of this year. [Newspaper]. ************************* from the Harrisville, New Hampshire, Centennial Commemorative Book, 1870-1970, John S. Schmitt, Editor, Harrisville, NH, 1970; 71 pp., illustrations, maps. *********** page 53, THE BEMIS FAMILY If public service cannot ever be adequately recompensed, at least a measure of recognition can be set down. The Bemis family has been a family of public service nearly every day since the incorporation of Harrisville In 1870 Samuel Dana Bemis, on the Committee of Incorporation, was elected selectman and held the office for fourteen years. When he was not Selectman, he was Representative to the New Hampshire Legislature, Moderator or Clerk, sometimes holding several offices simultaneously. Sam's oldest brother, Elbridge was Selectman for many years in Dublin up to the time of Harrisville's incorporation. Sams's older brother, George Washinton Bemis, had six children. The second son, also christened George W., who ran the livery stable in Chesham, also had six children. His second son was called George and his son's second son was also a George. Casper Crowninshield Bemis, fourth son of the second George, was Postmaster in Chesham and was the father of Casper and Bill Bemis who have been public servants from time to time through the years on many town committees. Bill served on the School Board for many years. He was the youngest man ever in the State to hold the Selectman's Office. Sam's father, Thomas, came to Pottersville in his mothers arms at the age of one. Thomas's father, James Bemis, had come to Pottersville in 1793 from Massachusetts where he had enlisted in the Revolutionary Army at the age of 18 and had been at Bunker Hill. Samuel D. Bemis' son, Bernard, had an extraordinary record of service. He was Selectman for forty-eight years, served on many committees and gave nearly forty years to the School Board. His second wife was a White from Marlborough, a woman of energy, calibre and determination. On her mothers side she was a Bancroft, descended from James Bancroft who was one of the settlers in Mosquitoville (southeast Packersfield-Nelson); on her fathers side, she was a direct descendant of one of the Whites of the Mayflower Company who came to this country in 1630. Typical of Bemis perserverance and continuity is Bernard Foster Bemis' son Ralph, one of the many Bemises in Bemisville. Ralph has beenTax Collector for more years than most of us can remember and has moderated Town Meeting for thirty-six successive years since 1934. The Bemis family has served this community quietly and effectively. They have been gentle conservers of those virtues and traditions that have fashioned Harrisville. ************** 1880 Census,June 1880,Harrisville (Chesham),New Hampshire,p.63A Bemis, George F.age 27,m.,works in wooden shop,b.NH,parents b.NH Emma J.,age 27,wife,m.,keeping house,b.NH,parents b. Notes for Emma Josephine Smith: [Received from Curtis Bemis Jr.] There is a conflict wrt. the birthdate and place for Emma Josephine Smith. The "History of Dublin", p. 718, under the entry for George Franklin Bemis, gives the birthdate and place for Emma as May 9, 1853 in Westmoreland, NH. The History of the Town of Sullivan, compiled by Rev. J.L. Seward, a very careful genealogist gives the birth date as March 9, 1853 at Park Hill, Westmoreland. The Certification of Vital Record, Standard Certificate of Death gives March 25, 1853 and the place as Chesham, NH. No official record of the birth of Emma could be located by the State Registrar. The birthdate was taken from the Official Death Certificate and the birthplace taken from the "History of Dublin, New Hampshire". This is supported on the Death Certificate of son James Elwyn Bemis who died in 1920, presumably when personal memories of places and dates were clearer than when Emma died twenty years later-----Curtis Bemis, 7/31/2000 ***************** Of historical family history significance- C.E.Bemis, Jr. Many stories and remembrances are passed down among family members that deal with Emma. She was known affectionately as "Grammie Bemis" and was the stalwart member of the family. She raised her grand-daughter Dorothy (dau. of Perley and first wife Lucy (Lutie) Eleanor Brown almost from birth thru adulthood and marriage, grandchildren were raised in her household (Gladys and Prentice, Elmer and Helen, also of Perley), sons and their families lived with them during early marriage years until they moved into houses nearby (Carl and Casper) and she always welcomed all extended Bemis family members at special gatherings--Thanksgiving was one such occasion. Emma was known for serving chicken pie, of her own special concoction and recipe, on these special occasions. Her descendants fondly remember chicken pie including my father, Curtis E. Bemis, Sr., Mary Theresa ("Fifi") Bemis Stevenson, and Beverly Foster Kennedy. (as derived from letters and personal contact). I was totally unaware of the chicken pie tradition until a visit with Fifi in November, 2000-- (from my notes and letter(email) exchanges) "About chicken pie for breakfast-- Yes indeed, all Bemis family members remember what Grammie Bemis (Emma) used to do when the whole clan came to Chesham. I never knew this until Gina and I visited Fifi (Mary Theresa Bemis Stevenson) in Mobile this past Thanksgiving week. She told us that she was going to make something special, a Bemis tradition, when we visited, but she would not tell us what it was. It was chicken pie and she had the original recipe that Emma had used. Now that is a Bemis family tradition and very, very tasty. I guess it affected my Dad the same way it has affected all Bemis family members." (also see transcribed letter-Curtis E. Bemis, Sr. to Beverly Foster Kennedy, 12/10/1984 under Curtis E. Bemis, Sr.) ************* Horace W. Smith is mentioned in a couple of family notes as another adoptee, the third, of Ira P. Smith and Fanny Buss (with Emma Josephine and Grace Annis Hardy) Absolutely no mention of Horace is ever made in any carefully prepared genealogy records, of which The History of Marlborough, The History of Dublin, or The History of the Town of Sullivan. I have Horace W. Smith, as a detached individual, in my records and here is a Report on him (from my records)-- |
