He married Calista Mary Russell^12750,¹²⁷⁵¹ 27 Oct 1859 ¹²⁷⁵², daughter of James Russell and Anna Mason. She was born 22 Jun 1841 in Pottersville, New Hampshire¹²⁷⁵², and died 1918 ¹²⁷⁵³.

Samuel D. Bemis, son of Thomas, was born February 8, 1833, He has been engaged in farming, and has held the office of selectman, being chairman of the board from 1872 to 1884. He was a member of the state legislature in 1872, and a delegate to the constitutional convention in 1876.

If public service cannot ever be adequately recompensed, at least a measure of recognition can be set down. The Bemis family has been a family of public service nearly every day since the incorporation of Harrisville
In 1870 Samuel Dana Bemis, on the Committee of Incorporation, was elected selectman and held the office for fourteen years. When he was not Selectman, he was Representative to the New Hampshire Legislature, Moderator or Clerk, sometimes holding several offices simultaneously. Sam's oldest brother, Elbridge was Selectman for many years in Dublin up to the time of Harrisville's incorporation. Sam's older brother, George Washington Bemis, had six children. The second son, also christened George W., who ran the livery stable in Chesham, also had six children. His second son was called George and his son's second son was also a George. Casper Crowninshield Bemis, fourth son of the second George, was Postmaster in Chesham and was the father of Casper and Bill Bemis who have been public servants from time to time through the years on many town committees. Bill served on the School Board for many years. He was the youngest man ever in the State to hold the Selectman's Office.
Sam's father, Thomas, came to Pottersville in his mothers arms at the age of one. Thomas's father, James Bemis, had come to Pottersville in 1793 from Massachusetts where he had enlisted in the Revolutionary Army at the age of 18 and had been at Bunker Hill.
Samuel D. Bemis' son, Bernard, had an extraordinary record of service. He was Selectman for forty-eight years, served on many committees and gave nearly forty years to the School Board. His second wife was a White from Marlborough, a woman of energy, calibre and determination. On her mothers side she was a Bancroft, descended from James Bancroft who was one of the settlers in Mosquitoville (southeast Packersfield-Nelson); on her fathers side, she was a direct descendant of one of the Whites of the Mayflower Company who came to this country in 1630.
Typical of Bemis perserverance and continuity is Bernard Foster Bemis' son Ralph, one of the many Bemises in Bemisville. Ralph has been Tax Collector for more years than most of us can remember and has moderated Town Meeting for thirty-six successive years since 1934.
The Bemis family has served this community quietly and effectively. They have been gentle conservers of those virtues and traditions that have fashioned Harrisville.

"They lived in Dublin, N. H. and then in Harrisville, when it was set off from Dublin. He was chosen the first Moderator of the latter town, and held it for twenty years. Was elected on the first Board of Selectmen, and served twenty years, most of the time as its chairman. Memb. of the Legislature 1872. Constitutional convention 1876. County Auditor 1884-91. Chairman of the School Board and held other positions. He has attended every session of the N. H. Legislature and every Democratic State Convention for 25 years." [Draper:77-8]

Thomas Bemis, 57, a farmer and Ann, 52. Also listed in the family were George W. Bemis, 25, a maker of wooden ware, his wife Mary A., 23 and their son, Charles G., 1. Also listed in the family was Thomas' son, Samuel D., 17, a farmer, attending school. Thomas and Ann were born in Massachusetts, while the rest were born in New Hampshire. Real estate was valued at $1500 for Thomas and $500 for George W.

The History of Dublin gives her name as Lydia Emily Mason (p.827), and, The History of the Town of Marlborough gives her name as Emily L. Mason (p.551). Since the Mason family was very prominent in Dublin, and the genealogy of the Mason family occupies pps 818-832 in The History of Dublin, and she
was born in Dublin, I adopt the preferred name, Lydia Emily (CEB,8/2000).
