The body of the late Samuel Bemis was brought here last Saturday and services were held at the Aztalan cemetery, Rev. E. C. Potter officiating. His daughter, Mrs. Henry Holmes, accompanied the body here and was in attendance at the service.

Mr. Bemis originally owned a farm in Milford and, after his wife passed away, he made his home in Lake Mills, where he had many friends. He was a pleasant man to meet and a good friend to have. A few years ago he left here to make his home with his daughter whose home was in Cleveland part of the time, and the rest of the time in one of the Carolinas. He had reached his 84th year, had fought a good fight and was ready to pass on.

CUTS HIS THROAT WITH HIS RAZOR

CHIEF ENGINEER AT THE NORTHERN HOSPITAL FOR INSANE COMMITS SUICIDE

MISHAPS CAUSE OF WORRY

ACCIDENTS TO MACHINERY ARE BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN REASON FOR ACT.

Frank M. Bemis, chief engineer at the Northern Hospital for the Insane at Winnebago, committed suicide some time late Saturday afternoon by cutting his throat.

The body was found by one of his co-employes Sunday morning at about 9 o'clock lying in the tunnel which leads from the engine room to the main building.

Because Mr. Bemis sometimes worked on the night shift, his absence from home did not cause his family any special worry and no search was made until Sunday morning, when he still failed to return to his residence. Then when the attention of the fireman was called to the absence he remembered having seen Mr. Bemis start through the boiler room the previous evening toward the main building. A search was made and the body found. The condition of the body indicated that the suicide had taken place shortly after he was last seen by the fireman.

Worried Over Mishaps.

Mr. Bemis had been employed at the Northern hospital for fifteen years or more and is spoken of by officials of the institution as being very faithful and conscientious in all his duties. In fact, it was that characteristic which is believed to have caused him to commit suicide.

There has been some difficulty with the machinery at the hospital during the last few months. Mr. Bemis expressed concern that he might be blamed for the mishaps. For example, a dynamo burned out last winter. Later one of the pumps became disabled. Still later something went wrong with the condensor of the ice making machine. Then another pump broke down. While neither the board of control, the superintendent nor the steward ever laid the blame upon Mr. Bemis, but rather considered the accidents the result of general wear and tear on machinery in use for several years, these mishaps bothered him. He is said to have been a man of extremely sensitive disposition, who worried over what people might say about him.

Obeyed an Impulse.

He worried so much over the matter he was urged to take a vacation and he did lay off for a short time about a month ago, although he did so with reluctance. Since he returned to his duties he appeared to be less concerned and there was no thought of his committing suicide. He completed his work at about 5 o'clock Saturday afternoon and went down to the lake front with his family, returning a little later to the engine room, while the family went on home. He was not seen again by any one except the fireman.

It is believed that the suicide was not premeditated, in view of all the circumstances. He was noted for his devotion and tender care of his family. It is believed he went from the engine room to the main building to shave, that being his usual custom because of hot water being available there and he obeyed a sudden impulse which caused him to go down into the tunnel, under the building and do away with himself.

The Family.

Mr. Bemis was about forty-six years of age and came to the state institution as an employe from Wausau. His home, however, was at Lake Mills. He was a married man and leaves a widow and three children, Ethel aged thirteen; Reginald aged eleven; and Frank, aged two years. The funeral arrangements have not yet been made. District Attorney D. K. Allen was called to the institution and made an investigation, but decided no inquest was necessary, suicide being plainly indicated.
