  Notes for Verner Elestor Bemis:
[Received from Tom Burpee, March 18, 2003]

Vern & Amy (Farnam) Bemis married on January 1, 1900. At year’s end, Christmas Day, 1900, Amy gave birth to Lucille Bemis. It must have been a very happy time for the couple; what better symbolism than marrying at the dawn of a new century, then receiving the gift of a daughter on Christmas. Unfortunately for Vern the joy was short-lived. Wife Amy contracted tuberculosis the next year and after a lengthy illness died May 6, 1902. Five years later in May of 1907, 6-year-old Lucille ate rhubarb leaf and died of the toxins. Vern must have been devastated considering 25 years earlier, before his 8th birthday, he tragically lost his mother to typhoid fever.

Fortunately, after the death of his 1st wife Amy, Vern met and married a local schoolteacher, Rose Regina Thiel, and she was a great comfort to him after the death of his daughter and for the rest of his life.

[Long Prairie (Minnesota) Leader, Thursday, November 30, 1939]

One of the best known businessmen in the region about Browerville is Vernon E. Bemis. Mr. Bemis was born in Rice county, Minnesota on November 15, 1875. He came to Todd county in 1886, when Browerville was a very young town and learned the carpenter trade and he worked on many of the early buildings in the town. One important building on which he was employed was the flour mill mentioned in a former article. With the beginning of the Spanish-American war, he enlisted in Company K, 14th Minnesota Volunteers, and was honorably discharged when peace was restored. Returning to Browerville, he followed his trade and also farmed at times. When the automobile assumed such an important place in the life of our people, he engaged in that industry. For a number of years he has operated a garage, including sales department and oil and gas station, in association with Mr. Fred Soule.

Mr. Bemis has been twice married, first to Miss Amy Farnam, whose family was one of the earliest to settle in Todd county and having been obliged to go away when the Sioux war broke out in the sixties. Mrs. Amy Bemis died May 3, 1905, and later he married Miss Rose Thiel of a pioneer family in Moran township. To Mr. and Mrs. Bemis have been born the following named children: Beatrice, Roy, Leola and Laverna, all born at Browerville.

[Bemis family in Browerville and Long Prairie, Minnesota]
Vernon developed a well drilling business in Browerville and moved it to Waterville. When he died he passed it on to Harold who, when he retired, passed it on to his son Herb who is still in the business.
