Notes for Edma Henry Curtis, Sr: Long Illness Proves Fatal To E. H. Curtis [received from Elizabeth Menke:04/25/2001] Well known Resident Dies at Age of 82 Years at Home Here Edma H. Curtis, Sr. 82, highly respected resident of this village passed away at his home on 40 First Street at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, following an illness that stretched over a period of several years. Born in Peru, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Reuban Curtis. Mr. Curtis came to this section when only seven years of age. As a young man he was employed for a number of years at the tannery here. Soon after leaving this position, he established a fruit stand on the site where the Farmers National Bank now stands, which he conducted for a number of years, later selling out to Fred Smith. Thirty-four years ago he went to Newark, N.J. where he remained for 20 years. Following his return to this section, he purchased and conducted for a time, a farm in Bangor. Later returning to Malone he served as janitor at the Bates school, retiring about five years ago when his health became seriously impaired. During the past four and a half years he has been confined to his bed, bearing his suffering with patience that bespoke the commendable characteristics, which he possessed. A week ago today, his condition took a sudden turn for the worse, continuing so until his death occurred yesterday. An honorary member of the Neshoba Lodge No.78, I.O.O.F., and a lifelong communicant of the Baptist church, Mr. Curtis was held in the highest esteem by his fellow members of those organizations, as well as his many friends in this vicinity, who will be deeply grieved to learn of his death. Surviving are his wife, who before her marriage was Ruth L. Bemis of Malone, four sons, Henry A. of Malone, Edma H. of Cincinnati, Ohio; William of Morristown, N.J. and Sidney B. of Brushton; three daughters Mrs. Cora K. Earle and Mrs. Ruth Lytle of Malone; Mrs. Mae Keller of Maplewood N.Y. Funeral services will be held from his home at 40 First Street at 2:30 O'clock tomorrow afternoon with the Rev. Charles A. Boyd officiating. Notes from Cora Curtis-Kiefer. Also,"... When the Civil War broke out (1861) he went to work for the government driving an ambulance. Enlisted in the regulars just at time of peace and served three years." WHERE ARE THESE NOTES????? What is the date of the Civil War? According to Joanne Shepherd, as told to her by Cora Curtis, Edma Curtis died of prostrate cancer. He stayed at home and was taken care of by the family. AKA: Edmund |

J. Bemis Passes Away At Home Here Estimable Resident of Webster Street Dies Following Long Illness--Funeral To Be Held Saturday Afternoon at 2:30 o'Clock Timothy J. Bemis, a highly respected resident of Malone, passed away yesterday morning at 11:30 o'clock at his home, 139 Webster Street, after an illness of two years duration. He was 67 years of age. Mr. Bemis was born in Malone, March 23, 1867, and had always resided in this vicinity, being a farmer by occupation. On August 30, 1887, he was united in marriage with Mary Donaldson. The deceased was a member of the Baptist Church. He was well liked by all who knew him and leaves many friends to mourn his passing. Interment will be made at Bombay. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In putting some information in my book I just noticed a death notice of Timothy Bemis, son of Jonathan Bemis. On this his middle initial is "J." I told you on Moms records she had him listed as Timothy Jonathan Bemis b. March 23, 1867. The Jonathan Bemis Bible listed him as Timothy A. Bemis. It puzzled me why she would have this when it was so obvious that it should be with an A. Mom was very careful with her records. Well, the answer was with information Mom had from Etta, daughter of Timothy. In a letter to Mom, she told her that her Dad, Timothy, changed his middle name because there was confusion with his cousin Timothy Jonathan's brother Timothy b. March 23,1833, had a son Timothy b. May 4, 1867. The same year that Jonathan's Timothy was born. Etta said that her dad told her to help keep the boys straight her Dad's middle name was changed to his Fathers name. So my records have Timothy with a J. for Jonathan regardless of what the Bible has. I have a note to that effect in the records now so I will remember if the question come up again.
