Nelson Saterfield was born in Whitehall, NY in 1845. He came to Aurora, Illinois some time before 1860. Helson fought in the Civil War, enlisting in September 1861 for a period of three years. However, he got pneumonia, then had a relapse and was discharged in April 1862. He enlisted again in 1864 for a 100 day tour of duty. In July and August of 1864 he was in a military prison in Columbus (Georgia or South Carolina) the state was not listed. He was discharged again in October 1864. He was married in 1872 to Sarah Hemstock, born in Sutton, England in 1852. They were married in Aurora, Illinois. Nelson and Sarah had seven children. Anna and Frank were born in Aurora and Margaret and Ruth were born in Chicago. There was a child between Margaret and Ruth who must have died in infancy. No trace has been found of the others. Nelson worked for the railroad, also as a laborer and as a foreman and it appears as he got older he was in ill health. He died in April 1894 from an overdose of laudanum by his own hand at 49 years of age. He is buried in Oakwoods Cemetery at 67th and Cottage Grove in Chicago. His wife Sarah died in 1918 of pneumonia and an organic heart. She was 65. She is buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery at 115th and Fairfield on Chicago's far south-west side. Her last address, 10107 South Elizabeth is gone now replaced by the Dan Ryan expressway.
