Aunt Lizzie CLARK Goes
To Her Final Reward
Good and Respected Colored
Woman Dies at Ripe Age
of 100 years
Lizzie WILLIAMS CLARK
During this week old Aunt Lizzie CLARK died at the ripe age
of over a hundred years. This respected
beloved colored woman was an old landmark in Houma. She knew it when but a few houses marked the site and saw it grow
into a city.
Aunt Lizzie lived on Canal Street for nearly half a century
and everyone who knew her loved her for her beautiful traits of character, for
her honesty and her great charity. She was always ready and willing to help the
needy, white or black, and her white neighbors respected and loved her for her
neighborly qualities.
She was a direct descendant of the Congo state, Africa. Her father, Walow WILLIAMS. was imported
from Africa by Miss Kate MINOR’S father when he lived in Mississippi. When the MINOR family moved to this parish,
Aunt Lizzie followed with other slaves and later on was married to Nat Clark, a
very industrious colored man, who at his death left Aunt Lizzie with a modest
competency which she preserved and fructified up to her death.
Miss MINOR certifies as to old Aunt Lizzie’s age and further
states that old Uncle John B. WILLIAMS, an older brother to Aunt Lizzie, who has
long since past the century mark himself, is still living at Hollywood
Plantation, being a pensioner from the MINOR family.
We personally knew and admired Aunt Lizzie since our early
infancy and it is with deep regret that we chronicle her death, but it is with
pride that we pen the above for she deserved it all and more. We place this humble wreath on her grave
believing that her reward above for her beautiful and industrious life is
assured.
“Resquiescat in space.”

Mrs. Wiley P. THIBODAUX, (nee BLOCK)
Mrs. Wiley E. THIBODAUX was called to her Eternal Home on
Sunday, June 30, 1929, after a lingering illness of more than a year. Her home going carries a pang to a wide
circle of relatives and friends. In her
passing, Houma and surrounding country has suffered an irreparable loss, for
she was always ready to serve in what ever way she could. In church work, Red Cross work, Storm
Relief, Flood Relief, State Anti-Tuberculosis Work, and many other
philanthropic and humanitarian efforts put forth in the community. She was a sympathetic and tireless
worker. Her love of humanity always
prompted her to lend willing aid and it mattered not whether this call was from
some organization or from a lonely soul in distress, she always responded. Many kind deeds and thoughtful acts of
charity were done by her, about which only the family and her closest friends
knew. She never sought publicity, but
was always modest and retiring. Her
friends deem it worthy of applying to her these familiar lines. “None knew thee
but to love thee. None named thee but
to praise”. And the eulogy remained
true to the end of her days. For in her
dying moments she would at times gain strength enough to order some act of
thoughtfulness for a friend.
Her home life was beautiful and happy. She was a devoted wife and mother. None who ever visited her home will ever
forget her easy and pleasing hospitality.
She possessed a fine combination of admirable traits of
character: genuine in heart, true loyal
to her kindred, friends, church and gentle in disposition. She was the exemplification of “Whatsoever
things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are honest,
whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are
of good report.” She was greatly
beloved by a host of friends.
She is survived by her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Russel
MOISE, a son, Alton, besides one sister, Miss Sophie BLOCK of Varnville, S.C.
and three brothers: Raphael BLOCK of
Bastrop, LA; Ben BLOCK of New York; and
Jack BLOCK of Alexandria, LA. Funeral
Services were held from St. Matthews Episcopal Church, July 1st.
A large circle of friends bemoan the death oaf this
beautiful character, and we extend sincere love and sympathy to her family in
their affliction and assure them of our prayers in their behalf.

Bolt Shocks and Burns Three Near Chauvin on Little Caillou
Sudden Tragedy Strikes Company on way by Boat to St. Joseph
Mission
Tragedy struck without warning at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday
evening among a cheerful party going by boat to the Mission services at the St.
Joseph church at Little Caillou. With
an ear-splitting crash a bolt of lightning struck the boat belonging to Mr.
Davidson KIEFF and killed Mrs. KIEFF instantly, fatlly injured his daughter,
Verna and blasted overboard Norman PELLEGRIN.
Verna PELLEGRIN (sic) survived the injury long enough to
receive the last rites of the Catholic church administered by Father Charles
Beauvais. Searchers thronged the banks
of the bayou for hours searching for the body of Norman PELLEGRIN and found it
at 11:30 that night.
When the bolt struck, piercing a hole through the boat and
setting it afire, it had just reached Moonlight Half, which is located about 18
miles below Houma on the Bayou Little Caillou.
Unguided, the vessel plowed into the bank opposite the hall and excited
residents, attracted by the loud report, rushed to the aid of the stricken
occupants.
Others Injured
Of the 11 occupants of the boat three were rendered
unconscious and burned. The injured
were Lydia PELLEGRIN, Laura Lee PELLEGRIN and Ida CHAUVIN. All three were rushed at once to the
Ellender Memorial Hospital in Houma where they were treated for burns and shock
Besides the three above it is understood that Mr. KIEFF, the
owner of the boat, was deafened, as was another girl occupant. It was impossible to determine at time of
going to press whether it was a temporary or permanent deffness.
Tells Story
Miss Ida CHAUVIN, 24, one of the injured stated lat
Wednesday night as follows: “We were
all on the boat going to the mission and that’s all I remember until I came to
in bed.”
The people of the group had been attending the mission
services being conducted at the St. Joseph chruch and were anxious to be
present for the closing night’s services scheduled for Wednesday. They left the landing in the midst of a
rainstorm that came up suddenly about 5:45 p.m. and had not gone very far when
the bolt struck.
Others on the Boat
Other members of the party aboard the boat, all residents of
the Chauvin community on Little Caillou were:
Verna and Gertude KIEFF, daughters of the dead woman, Louella PELLEGRIN,
Hazel Babin and Mrs. Eddie PELLEGRIN.
Rushed to Shore
The excited residents of the community rushed to the vessel,
put out the fire which the bolt had started and carried those aboard to shore.
Hurried calls were made for ambulances from the Ellender
hospital and local funeral parlors and from Raceland.
