FATCHETT, ALICE      1826            09 JUN 1893

*********************************************************

The surname of Poucher was supplied by Myrtle Nixon Balderson in April 2000.  Prior to that John was married to Alice Unknown.  I don't know how she found the name.  Perhaps, it was recorded in a family bible.    CFD 4-2000

Myrtle mentioned a succession for Joseph or father, John Fatchett. Perhaps Alice is named there.

Note: Aug. 2001 - It is confirmed that John Fatchett married Alice Poucher in Lincolnshire, England between July and September of 1842 thanks to Linda Brown, Fatchett researcher in England.

Note:  Sept. 23, 2001 - I have recieved the marriage certificate of Alice Poucher and John Fatchett.

****************************************************

Alice's parents were found in this website

http://www.geocities.com/ellen_shelly/Poucher.html

(this page has been removed)

*******************************************

Alice's parents confirmed as best as possible through emails with Poucher researcher in England named Brian Ferris.

excerpt of an email correspondence with Brian Farris, Poucher researcher Sept. 29, 2001

I have a transcript from the Bishop's Transcripts of the Baptism

Register from Nocton, which is where Richard and Millicent lived. With them as

parents the baptisms of 12 children are shown. With the exception of

Alice whose birth is shown as 25/9/1823 and baptism as 5/10/1823, the dates

are baptisms but I take these as birth dates for my purposes as I have no

reason to think that the disparity is very different.

They are as follows:

11/12/1807 Phoebe

11/9/1809 William

11/9/1809 Robert

8/3/1812 John

15/1/1815 Mayfield

20/1/1817 Henry

17/1/1821 Mary Ann

Alice see above

19/3/1826 Thomas

30/9/1827 Sarah (I have death in the Burial Register 19/10/1828 14months)

27/9/1829 Joseph

10/8/1834 Harriet

          ***

In regards to Alice and Mary Ann having different addresses at the time of their marriages, Brian Ferris had this to say in the same email Sept. 29, 2001

As regards the different address at marriage it is likely that Alice

was in service either in a home or a farm and that she would have met her

husband in that area. There would be no point going home to what appears to

have been a very overcrowded house when she could marry from her work home.

I don't know of any other Alice Poucher about this time or in this

area. My records are far from complete but those I have are reasonably reliable.

The Nocton transcripts came from Dave Poucher at Grimsby who is related to

Rich and Mill I think.

Alice's gravestone is not necessarily correct. Many ladies tend to

reduce their ages at various times in life. ...........

Sometimes ages on gravestones are estimates if there is no one to ask who is

certain of the facts.

excerpt of email from Myrtle Nixon Balderson, Fatchett researcher:

When I was home, my sister showed me a copy of John B. Fatchett's will and he mentioned

his daughter Alice (it was spelled Allas) Oaks and on the 1880 Washington County Missouri

census record they have John & Alice listed in Concord Township (Irondale) and three children

still living at home: Sarah, aged 21, Rosa, aged 16 and Alice, aged 18. That clears up one more

mystery.

More About JAMES FATCHETT:

Comment: James's death certificate names Mary Hodge as his wife.  His son, James Jr. was the informant.

Notes for MARY HODGE:

There seems to be some different thoughts as to the surname of James Fatchett's wife, Mary.  I found his wife as Mary Black in another file in World Connect, however, I found information on a Mary Hodges who married a James Fatchett that fits perfectly with the dates and locations of this family.  There are so few Fatchetts that I feel certain the information found on Mary Hodges is for this James Fatchett.

After contacting the World Connect file owner, (who has James Fatchett married to Mary Black)  he stated he got the information from Clarence Van Lear, now deceased (and also of my file) and Clarence was the nephew of James Fatchett.

The information compiled by Clarence Van Lear (nephew of James Fatchett) was graciously mailed to me by Bill Gallagher and the info on the internet in his file is excally as it is written in Clarence's information.   No sources were listed on Clarence's paperwork.

Compilers note:  Clarence Van Lear's genealogy paperwork (source of  Bill Gallagher's info) are the only place I've found James Fatchett's wife to be named Mary Black.   I personally feel Van Lear was mistaken on James's wifes surname.

1.  A Mary Hodges living in St. Louis with a roomer, Alice Smith.  Mary is

listed as 32 years old.  I don't think this is our Mary.  This one is a

little  too young.  I could not find a Mary Fatchett on the census.

Note:  I think it could be Mary Hodges.  Date is 7 years off which for a census is not uncommon.  CFD

2.  There was a James Fatchett, age 21, living in St. Louis at 2604 Franklin

"Jimmy."

Biographical Sketch of John, William H. & Robert H. Evens, Washington

County, Missouri

>From "History of Franklin, Jefferson, Washington, Crawford and

Gasconade Counties", Biographical Appendix, Goodspeed Publishing

Company, 1888.

parts between ** and ** concern John Evens of this family page

**John**, William H. and Robert H. Evens are sons of John Evens (deceased),

who was numbered among the early settlers of Washington County and was

one of the best men who ever made that county his home.  He was born in

Lelcestershire, England, December 10, 1797. At an early age he received

the appointment of cadet in the service of the East India Company, and

was educated for a military career, but upon the surrender of Napoleon

I, in 1815, general peace was declared, and young Evens, with many

other aspirants for the excitement of foreign service, was dismissed

and returned to his home. After laboring a few years with his father on

the farm he decided to seek his fortune in the New World, and sailed

from Liverpool in May, 1821, landing in New York on June 20; from that

city he walked to Phillipsburg, Penn., where parties resided to whom he

had letters of introduction, and he remained there until the fall of

1822, when with three other young men he walked to Pittsburgh, where

they bought a skiff, descended the Ohio River to Shawneetown and from

there walked to Ste. Genevieve, Mo., thence to the New Diggings, near

Potosi, and commenced mining operations.  In 1825, having saved a few

hundred dollars, he took a trip to Galena, Ill., and on the way had the

good fortune to be in St. Louis on the arrival of Gen. La Fayette, of

France.  He returned to Missouri the next fall and engaged in mining at

Valle's Mines in Jefferson and St. Francois Counties; he became engaged

in the lead smelting business in 1827, and in 1837 built and put in

operation a blast furnace.  Mr. Evens made several trips to Galena,

where he was engaged in the smelting business and during this time

twice volunteered his services to the United States against the Indians

under Black Hawk, and the last time remained in the ranks until the

noted chief was captured.  Politically, he was an old line Whig.  When

the late war broke out he took sides with the Government, and with one

of his sons raised a company at their own expense, which became Company

C of the Thirty-first Missouri Regiment.  In 1862 Mr. Evens was elected

representative from Washington County and served in the session of

1862-63.  His religious preferences were Old School Presbyterian,

having united with the church in Potosi in 1836.  Mr. Evens married

Charlotte Haigh, April 12, 1827.  They had ten children, of whom four

are now living, viz.: John, William H., Robert H. and Mary, wife of

Charles T. Manter, of Bismarck.  Mr. Evens died July 21, 1878.  Mrs.

Evens, who was born in England in 1806, is still living.

      ** John Evens,

the eldest son, was born in Washington County, September 18, 1837 was

reared on the old homestead, where he still resides, and owns a choice

tract of land of 640 acres.  He married Miss Martha Fatchett in May,

1866; she was also born in Washington County, and is the daughter of

John and Alice Fatchett.  Seven children have blessed this union, viz.:

John F., Edward T., William H., Philip R., Nellie, Cora and Alice. **

***********************

In the birth record of William, s/o Nancy and Joseph, it states that he is their sixth child.   Charles Philip is my great grandfather and his and, wife  Amanda's names came from my grandfather, Arthur Ray.  Also coming from Arthur Ray is the name of his Uncle Fred.  Ruth Mason Fatchett, daughter in law of Charles and Amanda, recalled Herman 'Buster' as Fred's son and Mamie as Fred's wife.  Who were the other three children of Nancy and Joseph?   Presumably, William, while he was the sixth child was also the last child.  He was born in 1890, the same year his father died.

*********************************

Compiler's note:  Sometimes information pops up in the most unexpected places.  I have questioned family members and searched the internet  for years for the children of Joseph Fatchett and Nancy Taylor, with precious little results.  We know through the birth record of William that he was the sixth child born.  I had only three of them.  Read on.

information given to her by Aunt Grace Fatchett Wolters d/o Charles Philip and Amanda Wallace Fatchett.

*Charles Philip was age 15 when his father died.    He was the whole support of their family.

*Uncle Fred

*Aunt Leona married to Harry Evens (I found this marriage in 1902 but

had no parents for Leona Fatchett)  Aunt Grace never knew Leona but

knew her husband worked in a bank in Bismark

*Aunt Charlotte who was called Lottie.  She married a man named  Orange

and they had two girls, Ruth and Bernice Orange.  They were orphans and

raised by an aunt on their fathers side.  The aunt was Bell Fortner.

Grace said Lottie had the first toilet she ever saw flush.  Last time

she saw these two girls was before she was 8 years old.

*Aunt Stella - Aunt Grace did remember Stella.  She married Lawrence

Hammer.  They had one son.  Stella is buried in Bismark.

Madeleine Wallace Townsley was papa's cousin.

Jackson Breau

The Missourian

Jackson, Dec. 27, ---  At the Missouri Pacific hospital in St. Louis, where he had been for four months, Charles Philip Fatchett, engine watchman on the Jackson Branch of the Missouri Pacific Railroad, passed away late Saturday at the age of 57 years, his death being caused by disease of the heart.  The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the Baptist Church, with Rev. Emmitt Cross in charge, and interment was in the Russell Heights cemetery.

He was born in Bismarck, and spent his childhood and early youth there. At the age of 18 years he began to work on the Missouri Pacific Railroad as section hand, then advanced to section forman and made an effort to qualify as fireman and engineer but on account of defective heart was not accepted.  He then began to work as engine watchman and in that capacity came to Jackson 17 years ago, and remained in that position until his death.  On Feb. 18, 1900 he was married to Amanda Wallace.

Surviving him are his widow, four sons and four daughters, Ray Fatchett, Collinston, LA;  Mrs Vernon Heimbaugh, Whitewater Township;  Mrs Wm. Wolter, near Jackson;  Norman, Jesse, Hazel, Helen and Charles, home, also six grandchildren and one brother, Fred Fatchett.

14.  ALICE ELIZABETH "LIZZIE"4 POUCHER (JOSEPH3, RICHARD2, ROBERT1) was born November 27, 1863 in Bollinger County, MO, and died June 14, 1934.  She married ZEBULON "ZEB" MOUNTAIN MCPIKE December 24, 1883 in Concord, Washington County, MO, son of JAMES MCPIKE and NANCY WOOLFORD.  He was born March 30, 1860 in Whitewater, Bollinger County, MO, and died May 16, 1950 in St. Francois County, MO; aged 90 years 1 month 16 days.

Notes for ALICE ELIZABETH "LIZZIE" POUCHER:

Lizzie is attached to these parents on the strength of her cemetery birthdate after marriage and her birthyear in 1870 census prior to marriage.  Also considered is her name.  Joseph Poucher's sister is named Alice and his first wife is Elizabeth.

At this time in history, I see only two Poucher couples in the area who could be Lizzie's parents, Joseph & wife, and Joseph's brother, William & wife.

It's always possible that Lizzie came from somewhere else.  Anytime presumptions like this are made, there is room for error.
